my fridge died

Post by Mesarthim »

it was full of cheese, meat, milk, etc and all kinds of sauces. not to mention a bunch of frozen meat, vegetable, soup stocks, and ice cream. had to throw out all that shit, lame.
and of course, the part that broke was the compressor which is absurdly expensive for the brand I had, so opted to buy a new fridge instead.
the fridge came with the house, maybe 10 years old. ain't nothing built to last anymore. growing up we had the same fridge for 20+ years until my parents sold their place. le sigh. :fuckoff:

dude did you really have to throw out all the groceries? unless it had been 24 hours or something they were probably still good

also buying home grade appliances can often lead to shit outcomes. check what fridges the restaurants are using. those are the ones to get. i bought a new vacuum recently and the ones aimed at commercial cleaners are a massive cut above the home market. some things are basic, we humans have dialled it in—fridge, vacuum, iron, most appliances really, the tech is sorted, so now they're built for obsolescence and with stupid new features just to make them more expensive. but

buy commercial grade, they only care about how long it lasts :santa:

yeah, everything in the freezer was thawed (ice cream was completely melted) and when i temped the fridge with a thermometer it was hovering at 55F (12C), no idea how long it had been like that. did try a few things like messing with the setting, resetting, etc and kept door closed for a while to see if the temp would go back down, but alas it only went up. Once it got up to 75F (23C), I knew it was kaput. The fridge still had power, so there was hope - but nah.

Only things that could be saved were a bunch of cans of seltzer and N/A beer, a handful of unopened shelf stable sauces, and some fruit.

The best idea is to toss the contaminated food. Incubation periods for food borne illness can vary. Best of luck getting a new ice box.

New fridge has been got. Slightly smaller than old fridge, but somehow feels more spacious. Old fridge, despite removing its doors and drawers, would not fit through the door out of the house. Took house door off hinges and still nadda - ended up carefully taking apart the door frame to make it fit and then putting it all back together. I honestly have no idea how the people who lived here prior to I got it in the house, but it is done.
