this wasn't really a hollywood movie, my understanding is that netflix basically handed over a blank check. i'm not sure if i actually read this somewhere or if this is speculation on my part, but i don't think there were any hollywood studios willing to finance a project of this scale.

anyway i really don't think we have to worry about scorsese using this as a launchpad for a The Irishman Cinematic Universe™

This wasn't that great. It was good for a bit of a history lesson on Hoffa but it could have been a half hour shorter. Had boring unnecessary parts. Every one's acting was a little stale, other than Pacino.

Pesci stole the show and was quite the opposite of 'stale', in my opinion. Glad Scorsese didn't have him act like his take from Goodfellas/Casino and spawn critics who would have endlessly compared the three similar performances. Loved how reserved and cold he was, and it really was the standout part for me in the whole film.

Oh, and Stephen Graham's Anthony Provenzano was another notable character who knocked it out of the park the way he did in Boardwalk Empire when he played Al Capone.

i watched this over the last couple-three days

the first probably three quarters of it are astonishingly dull, it is really curious how rote the acting feels and how poor the dialogue is. shit gets repeated for no clear aesthetic reasons; there are half-scenes a-plenty that really do not need to exist. the cgi ruins de niro and pesci, who were miscast to begin with and generally appear to have been carved out of cedar

the only interesting and really worthwhile part is the very end, when frank has nothing left and is even more dependent upon other people than he already was, doesn't know what to do, and isn't sure how to redeem himself

other than that there is nothing in here that didn't already get done better in goodfellas or casino or other non-martin scorsese mafia movies

shoutout to anna paquin for letting scorsese waste her talents on a half-dozen scenes consisting solely of long looks

"i heard you paint houses" is the title of the book this is based on and is a key component of the ooh mafia danger element of the trailer, but the phrase is never explained in the movie, nor is it used other than the one time. you have to go to the internet to find out what it means

and jimmy hoffa, of all people, is the one who actually says it, but jimmy hoffa never tells frank to kill anyone? frank starts working for bufalino and throwing guns in the schuylkill river, then he hooks up with jimmy and becomes a teamsters local president, but all the murders he does after that were on bufalino's orders?

it's not a super big deal but it bothered the shit out of me because i didn't know what "paint houses" meant until i paused the movie halfway through to look it up. that is lazy storytelling mister scorsese
