I'm getting worn out by the lack of social interaction - and this pandemic
A year of near-zero social interaction. Would you believe that in the last year, I've only actually sat down outdoors with 2 people who weren't blood relations - one of which was fucking Skinner. My booster shot on May 1st can't come quickly enough - after that I'll wait 10 more days, and then I'm going to pull my mask off when I step outside.
Ofcourse, I'm not going to be reckless like start going into big crowds, and I'm still going to wait a little longer before having my mask off indoors at places like restaurants and malls, but I'd like to walk out in the open around people without a mask, and finally start sitting with and talking to people. If I don't do that I'll degenerate mentally and intellectually.

Re: I'm getting worn out by the lack of social interaction - and this pandemic
As a hardcore introvert* I'm not so much as social butterfly as a social pupa, but after 13 months of lockdown in the UK even I'm feeling the lack of seeing my friends etc now. IIRC our pubs are going to be open for indoor socialising & drinking again in a few weeks, and I can't wait to spend an afternoon drinking with my friends again.
*I was diagnosed as high-functioning autistic about 6 years ago, meaning I spent the fist 47 years of my life dealing with undiagnosed autism. Which fucking sucked, but at the same time getting diagnosed was like someone opening the curtains and saying "hey, this is why your life's been like this" which has definitely helped in the time since, especially with work...

What does "high functioning" refer to here? Does it indicate high severity of the autism or does that mean you function well despite the condition?Svartmetall wrote: ↑22 Apr 2021, 00:48As a hardcore introvert* I'm not so much as social butterfly as a social pupa, but after 13 months of lockdown in the UK even I'm feeling the lack of seeing my friends etc now. Re: I'm getting worn out by the lack of social interaction - and this pandemic
OK, that's a whole thing
I think there's a tendency to assume high-functioning autism translates to "OK, you're only a bit autistic" whereas low-functioning would be the sort of person Leonardo Di Caprio played (extremely well) in 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape', the cliché of the twitching, drooling idiot. Like it's a pie chart, where a person with high-functioning autism has a white circle with a small sliver of black for the autistic part, but a person with low-functioning autism has a circle that's almost all black.
My own thinking is that the reality is closer to this: if you're autistic to any degree then you always have a fully black circle, but you also have a separate circle which is your neurotypical / 'functional' part. If you're low-functioning then the Functional circle is tiny and way smaller than the black circle, and if you're high-functioning then the Functional circle is bigger than the black circle. The black circle means that when your autism kicks in, there's no 'degree' or 'level' of autism, you're just fucking triggered and that's it - there's no lessening of the severity of how the autism affects your functioning at that point. Modesty aside, I have an IQ of 162 and would consider myself to be pretty well-educated but I know that if I get triggered I can be just as much of a screaming, irrational 5-year-old as anyone at the lowest end of the spectrum, but being high-functioning and aware of my condition means that happens a lot less often that if I were low-functioning - particularly now that I've been diagnosed and know what things to avoid in terms of triggering environments.
I'm probably explaining this very badly, but that's how it seems to me. Happy to talk about it more if you want.

Depends on the person, I guess.
On the other hand, i’ve really gotten accustomed to this work from setup simply because i’ve got way less things to worry about. I’m actually dreading the day that the workplace will announce a return to the office.

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving working from home - it's the lack of leisure-time social contact that's getting to me. My work has said we're probably going to be WFH permanently now, so once lockdown ends and I can see my friends again it'll be pretty much the best of both worlds.

I actually became more social during the pandemic??
and made more friends??
NYC was wild and working retail was harsh as we never closed and were busier than ever for a whole year. Things are getting back to normal and I miss how quiet the streets were.

A small fancy fancy wine shop. Everyone basically stopped going to restaurants and bars so we got all the business. We were deemed "essential"
And of course no taking care of employees better nor any backup help. But idk I'm used to doing 3 workers' jobs at the same time.

Totally. Booze stores will always thrive. You can always find a job and it's rather stable and a lot less horrible than the big chains. What's challenging for me is working nights weekends and holidays for too many years. That and not enough time to recharge socially

Re: I'm getting worn out by the lack of social interaction - and this pandemic
I've been exceptionally outgoing these last few weeks since I got fully vaccinated. Compensating for the year of zero outdooring / pent up need for activity.
My impression is that barring California, the fear of the pandemic has dissipated and people are out and about like they were pre-pandemic - especially here in Phoenix Arizona.
I think the next major step for me will be to join a gym and start going like I used pre-pandemic. That will be the real test of normalcy.

California is fully opened now we can go to the gym, restaurants, etc just with a mask when inside like most of the US now.

Yea well I was commenting on the masks. Masks are still being enforced inside stores and they don't care if you're fully vaccinated, despite the CDC saying it's OK for vaccinated people to take off their masks.

almost everywhere here now has a sign that says 'people who are not fully vaccinated must wear a mask'. still bring one with in case there are holdouts that require everyone to wear it, but those places are a tiny minority.

You're just engaging in theatrics now. You can take your mask off, you'll be fine.
I wonder if there are still businesses doing "deep-cleanings". Boy was that a waste of everybody's time. Had businesses instead fixed the ventilation systems instead of these ritualistic-theatric surface cleanings, things would have been a lot better, sooner.

you can still get covid or carry it even if you are vaxxed, it's not 100% effective. my mom is immunocompromised so i also wear it to keep her safe in our interactions. i like wearing it, protects against flu and cold, i hope it becomes normalized in our society.
