Re: norm macdonald died
As a child in the mid gloryhole era I would watch the local news, Dateline, 20/20 etc, with my parents. I had constant anxiety from what I would see, but kept it to myself.
Then Saturday would come around and I was allowed to stay up for SNL. It'd mostly be shit and then Norm would come on and take all those news stories that had upset me throughout the week and diffuse it all by turning it to pure laughter. It was even funnier when nobody in the audience laughed and he would stare at them for his own amusement. He didn't care and I loved it.
Later on when I went through severe depression his radio and talk show appearances were a big part of what got me through it with a bit less misery.
It reminds me - even though I'm not sure where I heard it - that he claimed to be pathologically shy and anxious as a kid. Then he said one day he was told to help an elderly blind man get to the store. While this was happening Norm was asked to describe what was going on around them. Norm said that as he began describing the world unfolding to this blind man he began to see all kinds of humor in it and couldn't stop laughing. He cited this as his beginning in comedy and departure from shyness.. I always thought it was a cool story.
I'll definitely miss him and am grateful that I at least got to see him perform live. I also highly recommend his book. It's...something else.

Re: norm macdonald died
He was so deadpan and obnoxiously in the moment that it was deceptive. The raw material was fantastic, but it was also a degree of subversion and comedy within comedy that no one else has ever done like that. Maybe this would clear it up a bit:
For me it was his sincere insincerity on those talk shows that got me. It made all the sense in the world, but also obviously none at the same time. That's raw comedy. No one else did that.

Re: norm macdonald died
I had forgotten how hilarious Norm was as Bob Dole. I'm guessing Jim Downey had some part in writing it. He was always fantastic at making a scene get crazier and crazier in the most subdued way possible. This is as opposed to introducing one obvious joke and then telling it over and over again for five minutes, which is most of what SNL generally is. And then at the end Norm shits on SNL because I think he had just been fired from Weekend Update for refusing to stop making fun of OJ Simpson.

Re: norm macdonald died
And also the outline of that deadpan sketch is basically:
-Bob Dole decides to leave the senate to focus on the presidency
-Bill Clinton then resigns as president to focus on getting reelected as president
-Bob Dole is stunned and off the top of his head claims he's going to get a sex change to increase his appeal to voters
-Interviewer questions whether that makes any sense
-Bob dole then claims he's going to find a way to become pure energy stored in a crystal and only emerge as needed when legislation he approves of comes about
To me two decorated politicians going about a campaign in that way is hilarious no matter where you're from. And then Norm actively trying to get fired at the very end is just icing on the cake.
But to each his own. I usually hate it when people try to explain comedy, so I hope that wasn't too annoying.

So then I've been hoaxed...Naked from the waste down at ten AM on a Morbid Angel message board...On a Sunday while waiting to move my car so it doesn't get ticketed. Life is going wonderfully right now.

Oddly enough there's a temporary city ordinance about attempting to have sex with piles of freshly fallen snow. No idea how that came about, but I'm sure it'll be lifted eventually. And with a bit of patience and a little luck I'll finally be able to live near children again.

Re: norm macdonald died

One of modern comedy’s greatest talents made one final stand-up special before he passed away – and it’s been kept a secret, until now.
Norm Macdonald, who died last September at the age of 61, privately shot an unreleased one-hour stand-up special.
The acclaimed Saturday Night Live actor-comedian known for his deadpan delivery was diagnosed with cancer in 2012 but kept his illness private from the public. He was working on new material for a Netflix special when he had to go into the hospital in the summer of 2020.
“His test results were not good, so during the heart of COVID-19 pandemic and literally the night before going in for a procedure, he wanted to get this on tape just in case – as he put it – things went south,” Lori Jo Hoekstra, Macdonald’s long-time producing partner, tells The Hollywood Reporter. “It was his intention to have a special to share if something happened.”
The result was a stand-up special shot in Macdonald’s living room. The actor filmed the entire hour in a single take. “He looks great and the material’s fantastic,” Hoekstra says.
As it turned out, Macdonald made it through the medical procedure just fine and the footage was literally tossed in a closet. But Macdonald became very ill a year later before his special could be properly filmed before an audience. “He ended up getting sicker last August and September and he remembered he had shot this and asked me to find it so he could watch it,” Hoekstra says. “He ended up watching it before he passed away.” Macdonald even suggested a characteristically self-deprecating title for the hour: Nothing Special.
Netflix will release the surprise program — Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special‚ on May 30.
The stand-up hour is likely a first in the world of comedy – a postmortem last joke and testament from a comic who relished defying contention. “From the various conversations I’ve had within our circle of friends in comedy and producing, no one has heard of any comparison to this [situation] — not even close,” says Hoekstra, who in addition to Nothing Special also produced Macdonald’s ABC sitcom Norm and his Netflix talk show Norm Macdonald Has a Show
The program will include clips of Adam Sandler, Conan O’Brien, Dave Chappelle, David Letterman, David Spade and Molly Shannon discussing Macdonald during the recent Netflix Is a Joke Fest.
“It makes me so happy that I can share it, but also so sad that we can’t share it with him,” Hoekstra says. “He didn’t do this for the shock that it exists. He shot it because he loved his material and was so proud of his material. He worked so hard and it really would’ve bothered him to have done all that work and not been able to show everybody. He did it for the stand-up. I just hope people appreciate that he did this.”
