Re: The heat is on
It was 109 degrees a couple of days ago here. Yesterday I went to Home Depot and bought some cardboard and heavy duty aluminum foil which I duct taped together and put them up on the windows to keep the heat out.

It's the first thing I do when I get home from work. Been sleeping with it open for a week or so now.

Re: The heat is on
The heat in my ten unit building has already clicked on a couple times in the past week.
Oddly enough the thermostat for the entire building is in my living room. I can't set the temperature, but there was one time when it was below zero outside so I decided to slow roast something in the oven for 5+ hours to enjoy a hearty meal. Since my kitchen and living room got well above 72 degrees the heat for the whole building shut off for several hours. Naturally the neighbors began panicking, and I couldn't hear them banging on my door because I was listening to very loud music. Good times in winter.

Re: The heat is on
that is strange that you have a thermostat but cannot control it - is it controlled elsewhere and the unit is simply used as a sensor?
I turned on the heat last night just because it did drop in the 30s last night but probably would have been fine without it.
also using the oven/stove to cook meals in the wintertime in Minnesota is key to survival. last year I made several batches of chicken / beef / fish stock using all the bones and vegetable scraps I had saved in the freezer and then froze said stocks for later use. always heated up the place quite nicely and homemade stock is 200% better than anything bought at the store. fuck, now I want to make some ramen.

Re: The heat is on
I think it was just preset to a certain temperature setting that doesn't change. The only reason that it's in my unit is because my living room happens to be right above the boiler room
People also used to complain because when I would work for 10+ hours in sub-zero temperatures I would open a bunch of windows when I got home. Otherwise it was surprisingly unconformable to experience a 70+ degree temperature change like that when my skin was still cold to the touch. I'd always get really itchy. Anyway, it would cause their apartments to get a bit hotter for a while. Being an asshole with the building's thermostat is not something I'm proud of.
