What do you use for anti-virus protection?
I've been using Kaspersky for years with no major complaints, except the price. $60 on one device for a year seems like kind of a lot for something I could probably get for free as an open source program. I'm wondering if it's worth it, but I also know next to nothing about computers.

Been using Avast for years now. It’s $75 a year plus a VPN. A little pricey but I have it on multiple computers and our phones.
I’d be cautious about using Kaspersky, I know they’ve been around for a long time but they are based in Russia…

just the built-in windows stuff, haven't used separate antivirus/antimalware since win7. i also still use firefox in tinfoil hat mode so that cuts the attack surface down considerably.

firefox + uBlock is a a win. I used to have a bit more add ons enabled but they would break too many damn websites, even ones without ads (like this site).

as long as you're using an adbocker and keeping windows up to date that should be all you need. if you're doing lots of questionable downloading (torrents, games, apps, etc) then maybe grab malwarebytes and/or keep using kaspersky.

also make sure you're always using two factor authentication with your email service, don't ignore that. never put sensitive info on a website that doesn't use HTTPS, any modern browser should warn you of this

Re: What do you use for anti-virus protection?
Windows defender is all anyone really needs if they dont use torrents
Best security if you are going to be stupid/risky is switching to linux or pay for premium malwarebytes/others that are not avast since it is a drain on computer memory.
Edit: thats if you use firefox (nerfed) and ublock
If you dont have ublock or another ad blocker than you should get one. Chrome is terrible but almost everyone uses it now firefox is better but not perfect with tracking shenanigans. I suppose with our use of phones its a moot point though. At least duckduckgo is a viable option over google now.

Re: What do you use for anti-virus protection?
Maybe I'll just re-download Malwarebytes and try what windows has to offer for free. Banking is the only concern I have, but to log in they send me a text with a numeric password to enter after I enter the one I already have set up. It's probably not fail safe, but maybe good enough to not really need added protection. I'll also probably get a new computer sooner than later anyway. The one I use most runs decently, but it's over 10 years old and will probably completely break down at some point.

Windows Defender only. Don't need anything else. Even if you torrent heavily, use trusted websites.

i think chrome is on its way to ban ad blocking plugins so there will probably be a lot of firefox hype here soonNoyka wrote: ↑12 Oct 2022, 13:48If you dont have ublock or another ad blocker than you should get one. Re: What do you use for anti-virus protection?
i should use duckduckgo but i don't care enough, it also doesn't work well enough for me to want to make the switch yet. your data is being harvested everywhere, it's almost futile to fight it at this point.
also it's always funny to inform people that their keystrokes on their phones are almost certainly being harvested. every text you've ever sent or any search query you've ever typed on your phone is probably sitting in some database.
going full tinfoil hat, going out into public with your phone is a whole other nightmare. the wifi tracking, music recognition, location tracking, etc

Thing with google they literally alter results. This is ehy duckduck is a better option despite the issues it definitely has. It has improved and im sure will continue to improve.

Re: What do you use for anti-virus protection?
Brave is chromium based like a lot of browsers are. I am partial to firefox which isn’t chromium based. It’s (brave) better than chrome because you can tweak it to your likings any browser you can customize is a step ip from chrome.m

Re: What do you use for anti-virus protection?
Duckduckgo's search isn't optimal but at least no censorship like Google search has.
The duckduckgo browser app on my phone is great. Also the @duck.com email address I have linked to my gmail deletes any trackers and ddgo can also generate private email addresses for email address fields. Also the ddgo tracker blocker VPN on my phone is doing a good job.
I'll give firefox a try on my phone.
Keystrokes are indeed hell. Hence I don't do ANYTHING related to cry-pto on my phone.

Re: What do you use for anti-virus protection?
Reason i rec malwarebytes with defender ifyou download a lot is I had an incident a few years back that i got this nasty browser hijacking malware hidden in a legit looking torrent. It was a one off weird thing that i removed mos of with nalwarebytes then had to go in and manually remove the rest if its files - something that is scary because you can turn your laptop into a fancy paperweight going into system files like i had to. Most dont go there and its easier now from my limited computer understanding. Zim correct me if im off. I just know enough to be slightly competent/not totally fuck shit up.Corpsepyre wrote: ↑12 Oct 2022, 19:43Windows Defender only. Don't need anything else. Re: What do you use for anti-virus protection?
nah, i run a million ad/tracker/script-blocking extensions. afaik incognito doesn't do anything other than not record stuff in your history, which isn't really a concern for me since i'm the only person that uses this machine. the extensions are mainly useful from a security standpoint (ad servers have always been a major malware vector) and from a quality of life standpoint.Vahmpy wrote: ↑13 Oct 2022, 00:06Tinfoil hat mode? i do agree with zim, as far as trying to avoid being tracked, it's all totally futile. the internet is a surveillance and counterinsurgency weapon and always has been. shifting everyone away from PCs and onto proprietary mobile devices whose primary function is to track and surveil means that aspect is now totally unavoidable, even if you don't personally use those devices.
i use DDG, it's fine, but i don't really trust them any more than the big players. switching off google was no great loss, it's been very bad for a long time now.
