Inflation shooting up again

Post by Grudge »

Thank you Mr. T

US inflation jumps to 3.8% as energy costs surge from Iran war
https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c202pgxx89lo

US prices rose in April at their fastest rate since May 2023 as the impact of the war in Iran was increasingly felt by consumers. A jump in the cost of gasoline and groceries pushed the consumer price index (CPI), the amount prices jumped by in the past 12 months, to 3.8%. It is the highest level since inflation hit 4% three years ago. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) said almost half of the rise was driven by surging energy costs, while housing and food costs also contributed. The US-Israel war in Iran, and the resulting effective closure of the key Strait of Hormuz shipping lane, has caused the price of a gallon of gas in the US to surge. The national average price for a gallon of unleaded is at its highest level since July 2022, at $4.50 (£3.33), according to data from the AAA motoring group. The rise in April's inflation figure, from 3.3% in March, makes it increasingly unlikely the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates this year.

Hey… that thing that people (who aren’t fucking morons) said was gonna happen is happening! Shocking.

Inflation has been climbing since before this Iran biz thanks to tariffs and pissing off our trade partners around the world in addition to the of control federal spending. Closing the straight and the resulting fuel prices just shot it into overdrive since it forced the market to react much faster.

Thanks bag of diarrhea inside another, bigger bag of diarrhea.

i'm not sure how i held out for so long but it recently dawned on me that i don't think things will get better or recover after bag of diarrhea inside another, bigger bag of diarrhea. i think there's hope that the maga base falls apart after bag of diarrhea inside another, bigger bag of diarrhea leaves/dies but i'm not really sure that will happen.

well, there's no precedent for what's happening in the world, so it's hard to say precisely how things will shake out. but it's looking like a longer-term global energy shock is now locked in, and also a rebalancing of global power is not far off. i think the safe money is on "things are going to get a lot worse before they get better"

for a number of reasons, i badly need to move, but am also terrified of committing to higher rent given the real cost of living increases haven't even started yet. it's paralyzing

there are so many bad things happening or concocting now it's a bit difficult to think about, and probably pointless to do so because i'm not sure it leads anywhere but to despair

it's the year of the jackpot, baby

Move to Dallas. I'll get you oriented and set up at the right places.

also i bought an electric scooter and have been commuting on that, i'm doing some teaching now like dusty. shoving AI regulation down teenagers' throats for cash, not bad. i just wish i could swear at them the way they swear at each other :redneck: but the main point is, e-scooters are the way of the future. i love my bike but i can't do 10 miles to the school and not get sweaty as a turkish bath pool party, but on the e-scooter in a nice coat, i can withstand the harshest australian winds and fog, which are admittedly, not particularly harsh, and arrive in professional condition

and it costs nothing, saving me $40 a week in fuel, at least, and i get to spend my commute along the ocean, then beside a river, which is much nicer than traffic lights

I’m seriously considering an e-bike. There is a bike path that goes 90% of the way to my work 8 miles away. There are some inclines so having the motor to take a break would be a huge plus when commuting.

i live in the most car-brained city in the region, and my particular slice of the city has far and away the worst driver behavior of anywhere i have ever been in my entire life. it is actually extremely dangerous to be a cyclist or pedestrian here, and the only reason there aren't more accidents involving either is because very few people are insane enough to brave it

so the solution for me, for the time being, is just beer. which is walkable and doesn't require too much danger to retrieve

I feel that. I got offered a job over 1k miles away and the cost of living increase is paralyzing. I'd spend the first 8-9 months paying back the cost of moving and everyone wants 3 months rent up front (and the median rent is $2.5k). Took me a goddamn year to find this job and I better take it but man I am getting some cold feet about the move. Wife would need to quit her job of 20 years and I'm not sure it's worth it.

Even if you just moved from WV to Frederick it'd be rough. Maryland housing is fucking insane. I'm right on the Pasadena/Glen Burnie line, about 15 miles from downtown Annapolis. My rent alone is $3k, you can easily add another $1k into it for all the other monthly expenses. I manage to get by but it's stressful as all fucking what.

Yeah I had a job in College Park and was about to rent a place for about that much until they let me stay on remote. I would not wanna try to live in such a high cost of living place again, but with the shit job market I'm being left with no choice. :oldryan: Hoping something in Pitt or another remote job comes through fast...

that would be the fucking corpo's buying shit up. they love some entry-mid level homes and don't care about over paying a little since there is no interest involved in the total. I had the same thing happen a few years ago 4 out of 6 times I put in an offer. only time I knew for sure it wasn't was when it got into a minor bidding war and the realtor was in direct contact with the other realtor. eventually got to the point where I just let them have it because it went from "I can afford this" to "might be tight, but we're still good" to "oh, fuck this". It was only on the 6th try that we had our offer accepted.

Living life in general here in NL is getting too expensive... I make a good salary right now, and in my situation I can afford it, but if I want to go buy or rent something else.... impossible.
Can't wait to get the fuck out of here.
