The zoo

Post by Meat Engine »

My wife and I went to the zoo for our anniversary. Is :xx: and /w\ at the same time. Certain animals have low populations or are extremely susceptible to the vagaries of our climate. A captive reserve is useful to try and breed up numbers, or provide a safe haven for animals that would thrive but for something temporary, like drought. Other animals have been injured such that they cannot return to captivity, so a zoo makes sense on some level. Still, though, seeing the bears and large cats was kind of sad. Seeing birds capable of flight in a smallish cage is off-putting as well. Other things were enjoyable, like the reptile house. Nevermind that shit. Here are some pictures.

This is a 30 year-old female grizzly. She seemed to be out of it, or lethargic or something. From quite a bit off she looked old. The temperatures are falling, but I can't imagine it is particularly comfortable for her.

That is a bald eagle that was injured, and had to have a good part of one wing removed. It can't survive in its natural habitat, so it resides in our zoo.

My wife took more pictures, but she has not uploaded them. In addition to the above, there were quite a few primates, marsupials, large cats, reptiles, a white rhino, and a pair of Asian elephants. I will bother her to upload more.

zoos are fucking depressing. I'll never forget the time I went to the Oklahoma City zoo and the Cheetah they had wore a figure 8-ish path down to the dirt in high grass and you could see that it just paced back and forth constantly. =/
