i am back with my findings

the Anbernic RG35XX is a really cool device that can run nes, snes, ps1, gameboy, etc pretty well. clocking in at only $55 USD
https://anbernic.com/products/rg35xx

i am currently most interested in the Retroid Pocket Flip. it's more expensive at $164 USD but i really like the clam shell design. it supports more systems and has some really cool features like being able to run android apps (netflix, etc)

still checking things out but i may pick up a retroid pocket flip

that is my understanding but i'd have to look into it a little further to make sure it's that simple. i also need to procure a good source of roms. i will return with new information at an undetermined date.

it seems like emulation starts to struggle when you reach the ps2/gamecube era but some games run well apparently

my roommate had the xmen one like 10 years ago after it was re-released on uhh ps3 i think? i didn't feel like it really held up at all, very one-dimensional. was fun to play in the arcade as a kid but did not enjoy it one bit as an adult
