His left hand could actually work more efficiently--his pinky often curls up when he's not using it--he ought to keep it hovering over the strings at all times. However, it doesn't seem to hold him back!

it does save energy though but you won't get the same percussive feel to your riffs if you don't have any downstroking

My pinky used to curl up when I wasn't using it, it was a really hard habit to destroy
