patterns in taste

do any of you have strange patterns of taste, feelings and inclinations that surprise you or interest you upon reflection?



i just realised after a retrospective that i vastly prefer bands with vocalists who play an instrument more than bands who have a non-instrument-wielding vocalist. i have never thought about this before, but a cursory glance through my collection reveals it in explicit obviousness. this is not to say that i don't like bands with vocalists who only sing, but on the majority, i prefer a musical vocalist.



another pattern of taste is that i prefer "organic" music. there are a few electronic outfits that enjoy, such as lemon jelly and chris clarke, but on the whole i dig the band vibe more than the fat man in a basement with a pic vibe.



also, all of the music i dig (besides classical) is post 1969



sit back and reflect on your own patterns of taste ... do you find anything surprising?

i'm pretty opened minded but I too like mostly post 60's music although I don't hate oldies from the decades prior.



I defiantly prefer music that has an organic as you say or atmospheric vide to it weather it be metal, post rock, groove/sludge, classical or electronica.



I don't think I have a preference if a vocalist plays an instrument or not but one thing I do love is a good keyboardist that adds a lot to the song itself, even if it's just to "flavor" it with a little something extra. clean, almost choir like vocals are always a plus as well.

I like heavy, sludgy, down tuned guitars. and vocalists that usually sound like they are trying to take a shit

I really don't have a specific pattern for my musical tastes. They're just very weird.

my tastes tend to be really polarizing. for me, it's not a very intuitive thing to describe, but i'll try:



for example, on one end of the spectrum, i will absolutely devour things that tend toward the abstract (e.g., skinny puppy's last rights as an abstraction of the addictive process) contrasted, simultaneously, with really banal and obvious stuff where you can basically read a lyric sheet and extract everything from it without even needing to listen to it (e.g., the last song off that murder by death album, and probably only tamtam can guess at which one i'm referring to).



i feel like that's kind of a cop-out though. it's like the equivalent of saying 'yeah! horoscopes totally describe me!' because it casts such a wide net, it's intensely difficult for anyone to fail to identify with it on some level or another. i'll try again in a serious way when i'm not drunk and trying to go to bed. this is an awesome idea for a thread though, so i'd like to do it justice.
