I can't find any real fault with this album. It's so bleak, eloquent and powerful, with one crushing, brilliantly placed riff after another.
I remember describing the listening experience to a fellating lover in high school as being hit by a ton of bricks. I don't remember the exact number, but I know some variation of the word "dark" shows up over 30 times throughout the album's lyrics
It looks like the primary songwriter for their legendary debut is finally going to write a followup (he wasn't involved in their other releases). He has been performing live with the band, although he apparently doesn't play guitar live.
If what he writes is anything like "Slumber..." this could very well be one of the best death metal releases in the past 20 years
you mean the hard-on bearer who did vocals + guitars was the music writer ? Because the other guitarist's name is there in lineup of the other later albums, and that that hard-on bearer later did vocals in some demos.
According to a recent interview Esa Lindén basically wrote all of the entire first album on his own, and then left the music scene entirely. For their next releases the band used material that was supposed to be for a thrash band but kept the name "Demigod" for sake of simplicity.
Now Esa is back as the primary song writer and the next album is supposed to sound like the debut because, as he claims, that's the only style of music he knows how to write
don't know how i managed to miss this one. listening now for the first time, this is some top shelf shit right here. atmosphere-wise, it strikes me as being in a similar vein to demilich. obviously very different in terms of songwriting and whatnot, but it wouldn't shock me if there were a direct connection between the two.
They're both from Finland and apparently knew each other when they were kicking around in the early 90's, so it wouldn't surprise me if they influenced each other. I know Adramelech and Demigod used to share equipment and had a few members in common.
Oh yeah and if you listen to this album carefully you can just about tell the order in which the songs were recorded, because Esa's voice gradually starts to burn out. It's pretty obvious they did it all in a day or two
i'm seriously disappointed i missed out on this for so many years. probably listened to it a half a dozen times in the last couple of days, it's quickly become a new favorite. just finished another go with it earlier this evening, followed by demilich (which of course comes immediately next in my library) and i'm currently capping off the listening session with karelian isthmus. what an absolutely crushing trio of albums, the early finnish DM releases don't get enough credit. i'd say they all rate as perfect in my book.
now i'm left wondering if there's anything else in that category i've been overlooking through the years
Dudley you might enjoy Depravity. They only released a few demos and an EP but the band has that weird sort of gloomy sound that progresses in an almost geometrical pattern - the sound Fins perfected in the early gloryhole era . Only problem here is the production which is a bit flat sounding.
