Why?

I always find something in his lists I didn't know yet and go check it out. Sometimes I like the new findings, sometimes I don't. But always a win for me finding something new.

I haven't really put it through the thought-wringer yet, but my initial impressions after a few listens are quite positive. thematically very potent, lots of standout tracks - no more of this is an especially beautiful piece, and of course the beggar lover as well. I'm not sure where it lands for me relative to the other 2010- albums but that isn't really anything new, those are kinda always in flux for me (except TGM, which I think is probably my clear favorite). but it's right at home with the rest of them, and I regard the whole run as one of the best of this century.

oh i totally forgot to answer. i remember thinking it was kinda neat when i listened to it and that i should probably go back to it but i haven't yet. when i stumbled across it people were praising it as AOTY material which for me it definitely was not, but i had a positive impression overall so probs worth revisiting. my problem is that i just really don't have a ton of enthusiasm for any new metal releases lately, even the ones that i loved i find myself having no interest in returning to. like that new thantifaxath for example, which is surely one of the strongest releases of 2023 in metal. incredible album, absolutely no motivation to put it on again

which isn't to say i'm over metal or whatever, that will never be the case. but a lot of other stuff has been commanding my attention and desire lately. i cracked my brain open a few months ago and it needs other things for nourishment currently

That is fair. I had a long while where I felt the same and just couldn’t find much enjoyable at the time with metal (2019-2020 or thereabouts( but it’s always my first love musically. :santa:

I still have yet to actually sit down and listen to the new Swans album in full. Shame :frown: I need to change that soon.

What stuff has been catching your ear lately?

Regarding the fleshvessel album. It’s good but I haven’t gone back to it myself other than a second cursory listen. I wouldn’t pit it in my top albums of the year.

yeah definitely sit down with the beggar and listen to the whole thing, it's incredible. i'd probably put it next after TGM-TBK-Seer in terms of where it falls on my reunion ranking, so it's in very rarefied company.

last few months i've gravitated toward a lot of ambient stuff, lots of stars of the lid and tim hecker and eno and a dozen others. heavy rotation for the greats of 4AD's early days like dead can dance, mortal coil and cocteau twins. very heavy on joanna newsom during the early months of summer... lots of swans binging, lots of toby driver's various projects still, and i've really been enjoying yo la tengo quite a bit. and my metal fix has mostly just been deathspell. it's a weird mix as always :redneck:

New Marduk is good  I wish it had a bit more mid tempo songs like Shovel Beats Sceptre because it's brilliant.

i have tried with marduk a bunch over the last 23 odd years and it just never, ever sticks. like even going back to the nordic metal tribute comp that i obsessed over in high school, the one track that i'd always skip was the marduk one.

which as i'm pretty sure i've mentioned previously, it really doesn't make a ton of sense to me because i adore funeral mist, but here we are

Well, the music of Marduk is completely different compared to Funeral Mist.
So it's understandble you'd prefer one over the other.

yeah not new exactly, but a fine document of the assassination run of live shows. definitely a stronger performance than the show i went to, but they didn't play their cover of power of love at grieghallen so it balances out

yes! i was pleasantly surprised, as i've probably said elsewhere 50 times already, i am not digging much 2023 metal, but sulphur aeon was a notable exception to that trend
