Stand witness to The Long Defeat! Hearken to the first emanation of the third era of DEATHSPELL OMEGA; forty-four minutes of Black Metal enacted through five instalments. Recorded live by the French power trio in July 2021. Bile and venom distilled and added until the leaves fell.

“The Long Defeat” unfolds over three parallel storylines told via three different mediums. Two in writing: the lyrics, as well as a fable. The third speaks through the artwork – two metres’ worth of maniacally detailed visions depicting the same premise its written content draws from. All three are fundamentally entwined but diverging in narrative, each complementing or contradicting the others.

March 23! I think they always use a session drummer, or different session drummers per album. So it's still Mikko, Hasjarl, Khaos I think.

i wonder, because they went out of their way to specify the french core, and that IMO would probably exclude mikko. they allude to this in the bardo interview from a couple years ago, and in a recent (very stupid) social media dustup, carpenter brut also referred to him as a session contributor. M-A lists him as a member, but as far as i know that's always been speculative, strictly speaking - i don't think any of their albums actually list any individual credits, do they?

guessing you came across the heresy labs account, it's run by some anarchist dweebs who play extremely fast and loose with guilt-by-association. they're probably a bunch of feds, at any rate best practice is to just ignore the political tendency that earnestly believes bedtimes are oppressive

that said, it's not entirely bullshit, but i think it's also a stretch to say DSO are NS or whatever. specifically, mikko aspa is definitely a neo nazi and all-around piece of shit, but he also doesn't contribute anything creatively to the band (or so they claim). so a lot of people are understandably wary of lending support to any projects he's associated with

i'm pretty iffy about the whole thing to be perfectly honest, but i love the music so i guess i am just kind of motivated to rationalize it being fine to listen to them

I don't get it. Listening to the music of a band of which one or more members have certain views (like national socialism) does not make you a national socialist!

Being appreciative of someone's art does not make it so you are placing the artist on a pedastal.

A lot of art is meant to provoke and make the audience think.
I believe DsO is explaining this very finely in their latest Bardo interview.

Stop being so afraid of art and its artists or their views. They are not yours until you make them yours.

i agree with all of that, my thing is more around the ethical issues of materially contributing to individuals who are actively involved in promoting and spreading nazi ideology (which DSO as a band, at least in my view does not, but one of their past contributors absolutely and irrefutably does)

basically what i'm saying is that "don't give mikko aspa your money" is a reasonable position to hold, and following from that, the main question for me then is "does listening to the band's music or buying their stuff put money in this hard-on bearer's pocket". obviously i've come up with an educated guess on the answer to that question, but i also wouldn't fault anyone for not agreeing with it

SMRC was the one that put them on the map and the start of their 'second era', i consider it kind of a transitional release. it still holds up exceptionally well IMO, even if their new sound wasn't quite fully formed. that really solidified on kenose which laid the foundation for most of their output up until this new one
