Not locking this thread... what you guys are saying is simply all speculation based on hardly anything. 6 drum tracks by Erik doesn't mean there's only 6 death metal tracks.

So far very different artists have been an inspiration for Trey.. The gathering, Pink Floyd.. and none of the albums sound like the artist that got Treys creative juices flowing.
It will never be as groundbreaking as Altars or have the impact of a Covenant but i'm sure it will be cool.
MA has always been developing and doing the things nobody was expecting.
I feel we are in for a big surprise.
I recently spoke to a good fellating lover of mine who has had the priviledge to hear a rough mix of I.
Whether this is a version before Sean Beavan has worked on it i don't know.
He told me:
Hey, just heard the new MA.. pretty vague...
Me..:
What do you mean by vague?
He:
Well, all the techno stuff...
I get the feeling this is gonna be a pretty experimental album...
And whatever the result, i feel they are not playing it safe.
I don't think it's necesarily gonna suck. remember "Trooper" from Formulas? that one has kind of a techno-ish sound. (It's a syntheziser with the sound of a helicopter in the back)
Maybe the techno tracks are just instrumental tracks like that one. (but more techno obviously considering Trey's recent tastes) although I would prefer all that stuff got realesed as part of a bonus second disk, and not as part of the main album.
We can only hope...

Without more info, one can only do is speculate or don't talk about it all, but that's not an option since the album is eagerly anticipated.
I think the vocals will be good enough, studio vocal recordings always sound better than live anyway.

Why disagree on that statement?
Comparing situations where vocal sound is produced are ideal in a studio and can be done over and over until it's perfect, while live it can fail due to many factors.

That is true, but the singers performance isn't always better on the album. I remember lots of moments with different bands where the singer does a better performance live than on the record, i.e. more soul, heart, energy.

uni's contribution regarding the techno parts has me really, really worried. not about the integrity of the new material necessarily, but that i'm going to wind up looking like a tremendous douche for berating the shit out of everyone who's voiced concerns about techno influences.

i think ma with techno influences will still be very ma, they're not going to go all the way to crazy land, it would be inconsistent with their previous albums. although there is certainly diversity in their oeuvre their music is much more consistent than other bands. it has integrity and i believe that the new album isn't going to betray this integrity even if I adopts faster electronic influences than their other albums (which of course already have a lot of electronic tracks that arguably don't interrupt the vibe too much).

Re: Sean Beavan mixing I
Yeah pete is very subtle even during fruital fast bits. Like for the intro/verse of Prayer of Hatred he changes his rolls slightly after every bar or Heaving earth during the 4/4 blasting riff he alternates between an eight stroke roll and a six stroke roll with a stop. Just one of the many reasons to come back to MA again and again.
I can see Tim defaulting to eight stroke rolls from snare to tom quite a bit.
Although he said he will try to emulate pete's style and combine it with his own so i have a lot of faith in him. I personally think ....and time begins has some really creative drumming in places.

I love Heaving Earths opening riff, the drums are great and the accent shifts on the hi-hat are subtle but brilliant.

Re: Sean Beavan mixing I
more precisely the drums on Gateways were "sound replaced". Obviously Pete played his performance and then they triggered his hits with drum samples and mixed them in. Although, the samples
are more prominent on G. These days with advancement and flexibility of technology you could definitely create a convincing mix with samples. Back then, samples were used for "missed" hits or bad/weak hits through out the mix; they were an aid not a luxury. But it seems MA wanted to push it and just left it throughout. I'm not a fan of G drum sounds either. To me, Covenant and Formulas has sick drum tones.
