I like how this reviewer is constantly bashing whole death metal genre as being dull, repetitive and unoriginal. No one said it's about being repetitive. It's obvious that this reviewer is so negatively biased towards one whole genre which he doesn't miss the chance to bash on, so one big f u c k o f f to him. Morbid Angel were never about being technical, fast or whatever anyways, it goes without saying.

That's what reading reviews is usually like.



These are the parts of the review I agree with:



The dynamics of the album he points out. The songwriting is ever present.



99% of the current Death Metal genre being useless self-referential garbage.



The parts I don't agree with:



The hardcore influences he's talking about. I'm a big fan of punk/hardcore, but I didn't notice anything hardcore-like in it. I guess you could say that blast-beats came from hardcore... But yeah. I just didn't notice anything like that.



"Morbid Angel have let the metal world see a glimpse of where Death Metal can go and I, for one, like it." - I'm not sure how this should be understood? If he means in "spirit" then yes. That bands should strive for individuality. But I don't think we'll see a million bands copying the style of Illud.

I didn't realize he was reviewing the entire death metal genre. It reads less like a review and more like a childish defense.

I agree that his argumentation is severely lacking. But I do think there is something to it. I consider myself a die hard Death Metal fan. But I don't think the state of the genre is above criticism. Metal has (very much due to the Black Metal revival in the 90's) become very retrospective. "Modern" has for a long time now been a total taboo. But Morbid Angel was a VERY modern band when they first hit the scene. It's too bad, because the few good bands today (Immolation instantly comes to mind) are both modern and different to the old school. So I don't think the reviewer (Iann something) is criticizing Death Metal as a genre, but the current state of it.

a couple things: how about trying out a fucking comma, hard-on bearer. this hard-on bearer is obviously new to both writing, and morbid angel. how did he manage to get access to the album early? or access to a job where any amount of writing is necessary?

OK, so he's also new to metal as well. but, maybe he can elaborate on what makes it so not-dull?

oh, ok, i guess he can't do that beyond giving us some vague throwaway words that don't actually tell us anything about the music.



that's as far as i made it. i can't be bothered to read the rest because it's obvious this site just solicits reviews from whoever will give them out for free. they apparently don't have anyone to do proofreading either. this is very obviously amateur work, probably submitted by someone in high school or just fresh out of high school or maybe a high school dropout.

Using the entirety of a genre as a point of perspective on any album is a cunt.

His review of the album stops at Blades For Baal. The rest is just critizism on the "repetitive and unimaginitive" current Death Metal genre and how this album stands out from all that yet he fails to fully explain or give us an idea of how that is so. Lame stuff.
