Hello Everyone, I am honored that anyone even thinks of me anymore. Everyone take a chill pill. So what if I am a Christian. When you have been into the occult as long as I have it is better to keep your beliefs on things like this to yourself. But since it is such a much talked about topic on this thread, I will give some insight. What is good and evil? After my many long years of thinking about this I have come to this conclusion. "Evil" is all things that are against and void of life, and simply put "Good" is life. Take my website richardbrunelle.com, what is the first thing you see the fires of hell over the top of heaven. You can not have one without the other. When I joined Morbid Angel back in 1985 I committed my soul to the dark. Today I realize I am not strong enough of a person to control the dark, so I put balance by becoming a catholic. Laugh and say what a fool all you want, but how many of you actually been faced with the consequences of devoting every living fiber of your body to Satan. I took my eye off the ball and was left with a choice death or life, I am not ready for the eternal torment I will face for all of eternity when life escapes me. so for the few years I have left of life I choose to live. And as far as Lady Gaga I think she is hot and I would love to hook up with her. Her music is decent but I am more concerned with hooking up with her. The last thing I will say is that I have not had any communication with Morbid Angel for a very long time. I do not claim to be only into death metal, I like all kinds of music, Beethovan, Sabbath, Van Halen, Ian Van Dahl, Carcass, Vader, I even think the Momas and Pappas " california Dreamin" are cool. Hey guys I will check back form time to time. Thanks for your concerns.

Understandable, however still ironic and funny. On the Morbid Angel board: the band that symbolizes a stand against mind/thought control. How can you not see irony in that?

because there is a big difference between silly word filters on an internet forum, and mind/thought-control. it just changes a few random words for the sake of amusement.
i understand your point, i just don't believe it applies here, hence there is no irony in play

Of course, what I said was to be taken with a grain of salt. However, it does still apply here and it is ironic no matter how you look at it. Putting words in our mouth
In this case, the severity is just less

Greetings Richard. Welcome to the forum. Our community has been in existence for many years and over time it has acquired a distinct sense of humor seen in the various things we say and do. One of these is when certain words (chosen randomly out of playfulness by the administration) are typed and automatically replaced by some absurd phrase or word. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it isn't. The intention is innocent however.
Your beliefs on religion are of course, your personal matter, we respect that. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see your transition. And who can blame us for being surprised? We were only used to seeing Richard Brunelle play awesome music during a certain period in the most important death metal band in history. We never knew Richard Brunelle, the man.
We appreciate that you have come here and interacted with us. You are most welcome.

Absolutely!
Also, i am sure i am not the only one who has seen a change in views where Trey is concerned... Which is fairly logical. The hard-on bearer is about twice the age he was when he started morbid angel. People evolve and learn.
I do hope you will be around once in a while. Maybe shed some light on the reording processes and stuff you were involved in during the recordings of two of the most groundbreakin Death Metal albums of all time.
Eventhough the song were written by Trey, the flavour you added on the albums lead wise is awesome. in fact some of your leads still give me goosebumbs when hearing them back.
I feel priviledged i got to see the tours for altars and blessed. As seeing you guys perform had a huge impact on the way I experience music.
Respect for the art you created, and good luck with you studies.

Philosophically, I agree with you. Any religion is fundamentally flawed from the onset. However, Satanism gets some kudos for aesthetic.

Fuck, I just want to thank Richard for popping in. He is a big part of the two groundbreaking records. Besides his contribution to A-B I was lucky to have seen him live and he gave it 200%.
The Altars re-release dvd says enough
He's obviously been through a very bad time. If Christianity does it for him; go for it.

Re: .
Wow, a lot of people here sure get upset about what someone else decides to care about in their own private life....
In my opinion, to each his own.
If there is an all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving, all-forgiving God there is NOBODY that can know this for sure. The bottom line is this: We all live, we all die. Nobody knows what is in store for us on the other side. Maybe nothing, maybe something... who knows.
If Richard has found peace, and has gotten away from drugs and thanks God for that, then so what???
Ohhhh, wait a second, religious enlightenment is OK if it involves something that is verifiably invented by a horror author in the 1930s, who in fact admitted that it was all a fairy tale, and if someone here happens to believe in the "ancient ones" and so forth then he is "totally death metal, man"... Come on... Any MA fan with any sense appreciates the fictitiousness of what MA sings about, and enjoys it, but doesn't REALLY believe it ..... but, if everyone here had just found out that Richard has devoted his life to serving Chthutulu or something everyone would be responding with devil horns, and thinking it's sooo bad-ass. Hypocrites.
All religion has both merit and error, and only extremists would claim otherwise, granted many Christians do, but not all. There is nothing, I repeat nothing, "FUNDAMENTALLY" wrong with Christianity. It teaches to forgive, love, and be good. I don't think anyone here would have any problems with someone who follows its tenets correctly.... but.... it is Christians that are the problem, the plague if you will, not the doctrine.... Now, not to generalize or anything, but most Christians tend to be very, very self-righteous and critical of anyone who does not follow their beliefs, and they chastise all who don't listen to them.... They are hypocrites as well. The historical Jesus was, by all accounts a very good, kind, and wise man... his followers in the other hand, are not. Ghandi summed this point up perfectly, he once said when asked what he felt about Christianity: "Your Christ? I like your Christ. But your Christians, I do not like them. Your Christians are NOTHING like your Christ!"
And whoever originally said that quote about how Christianity was created by degenerated Romans as a form of oppression and control has no clue what they are talking about. As far as I am concerned, I do. I am a graduate student working a PhD in Ancient History with a specialization in the Roman Empire..... Not to get off on a history lesson here, but the Roman world did not welcome Christianity. Pagan Rome was unbelievably accepting of any, and all new and foreign religions, and in many cases welcomed them. Christianity was viewed in a negative light for a few reasons.... Firstly, Romans saw early Christians as odd since they worshiped their god in humble places, (usually in shoddy homes in the poor districts of the city), they worshiped privately, they referred to each other as "brother" and "sister" which led to rumors of incestuous rituals, they practiced the Eucharist (communion, ie, eating bread and drinking wine that represents Christ's body and flesh) which the Romans were utterly shocked at, and this led to rumors of Christians being cannibals. Christianity promised salvation to woman and slaves (the two groups of people that it grew exponentially amongst). The Christians refused to pray for the strength of Rome. ---this was all that Roman law required of other religions... basically worship any god you wish, but pray for the future of Rome---- The Christians refused this as it violated the first two Commandments... if you're wondering "well what about the Jews? They follow the 10 commandments?" The answer is that the Romans had an unbelievable reverence for ancient religions, and ancient gods. They gave lenience to the Jews on this issue, out of respect, but occasionally certain emperors would overstep this boundary (ie, Tiberius, Caligula, Vespasian, Titus, etc,...) So.... in 64 AD many Romans disliked those incestuous, cannibalistic, secretive, lower class Christians, mainly due to false rumor and superstition. When in 64 the great fire consumed much of the city, the people looked to their leader, he, in turn placed the blame on the Christians since everyone would jump on the boat.... Ergo, the first persecution of Christians.
Now... as time progressed Christianity grew, and so did the empire. The emperors would not want Christianity to supersede the pagan tradition for a great number of reasons. Primarily since they would LOOSE CONTROL of their subjects, who did not care about their life on this earth, and only cared about the next. You have to remember that pagan religions focuses heavily on the here-and-now, which is supremely advantageous for an emperor. Eventually Constantine the Great , in the early fourth century AD would officially end persecution of Christians, and as his mother and wife were Christians, he too would convert on his death bed. Decades later, Theodosius would make it the official religion of the empire. Shortly after wards the empire fell into decline.
One of the most eminent and studied of Roman Historians, Edward Gibbon, in his "The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire" essentially blamed the decline and fall on the rise of Christianity. Some modern historians agree, some disagree, but his argument holds much weight. As the focus of the people shifts from the empire and the power of Rome, and changes to ones personal salvation, and the after-life this greatly weakened the social structure of Rome.
So.... if degenerate Romans desired to control their people, they would have wanted Christianity to fail, not prosper.
Sorry for that long digression. But in short, have an open mind, and let Richard do whatever makes him happy. Lay off him, and show some respect.
In my opinion, to each his own.

Hypocrites.
Either this is not directed at me or you were too inept to grasp what I've written. All religion is a crock. Christianity is a crock. Satanism (is theist respects) is a crock. Wicca is a crock. Judaism is a snipped cock. Islam is a sandy crotch. They are all bullshit.
I suppose, though, it is easier to manufacture what you want our perspectives or responses to be, "but, if everyone here had just found out that Richard has devoted his life to serving Chthutulu or something everyone would be responding with devil horns, and thinking it's sooo bad-ass," rather than address anything that actually has been said. It requires less mental strain, sir? For whatever reason, it is not effective.
I respect Richard as a musician. I don't know him on a personal level, but I'd probably get along with him. (I do not only associate with other atheists.) However, when it is said that someone is of any faith, I will laugh. It matters not who it is. It does not lessen any other aspect of them to me, but other aspects of them do not prevent me from commenting on what I comment on.

I've always wondered what Richards solos would have sounded like on later albums.

I have tended to enjoy the stuff with Erik as wingman the best, but Richard's work is excellent.

No, this was not directed at any one individual. If religion as whole to you has no value, fine. That's your choice. Essentially there are two options. A, you're right. And B, you're wrong.
If you're right then after you're gone you have nothing to worry about for eternity, and should find solace in the here-and-now that you are one of the few that are enlightened enough to look beyond religion. If you're wrong, well, depending then on "who" is right, you will have varying levels of consequence to face.
My point here is this. You sound utterly convinced that "A" is the truth, ( ie, that you are right, and "all religion is a crock") That being the case, why do you care if someone else disagrees with you? Most people who are of a certain faith, whatever that may be, "do care" if you believe what they do since they believe in an afterlife, and want as many people as possible to enjoy it with them. But, if you feel that there is nothing after death, and all that matters is the here-and-now, then why do you care how someone else spends the here-and-now? If being a Christian, a Satanist, a Zoroastrian, a Hindu or whatever makes someone happy now, then why do you care?
I hope that I am wrong here, but I can already see some snide crude remark to answer this question... I'm not trying to convert you to any religion (I don't practice any either), nor am I trying to be a dick, so don't be defensive on this, but honestly ask yourself "why do I care so much about if other people follow a religion or not?"
Now, next to politics, religion is an awful topic to discuss for many reasons. But, it can also be the most fruitful if both sides show respect and decency to the other.
I happen to agree with you partially. I feel that organized religion at least is often times negative, but that at times it has its place. I don't feel that the universe appeared out of nowhere, and that all matter within it has always existed, it just makes no sense... but I also feel that are minds (we use less than 8% of them) are nowhere capable of ever understanding such a complex issue as this. Therefore it is easy to apply the unknowns to a deity, since that explains them. On the other hand, everything has too much order and unison to be just a mistake, or coincidence.
The bottom line is that nobody really knows anything absolutely. Religious peoples have blind faith that God exists, you have blind faith that he does not. The definition of a religion is "something that one believes in and follows devotedly." So, Atheists, whether they like it or not, are just as "religious" in that regard as a God-fearing Catholic.
To be so antagonistic towards religions shows more-so a psychological battle that is yet resolved within you. I, I could care less what anyone believes. But I would never overtly offend anyone based on their personal choices in their own life. Perhaps I am wrong on your intentions, but when you listed a line of religions and had some uniquely offensive way of saying that they are incorrect, that shows clearly: not that you have no religious beliefs, but rather that you feel in some way threatened by them. Much like how one who is overtly racist refers to certain peoples as n*ggers, wet-backs, k*kes, etc,.. is really just threatened by them, and is not comfortable with themselves and who they are.

Stop caring so much if other people find peace in whatever religion they want. If all that matters to you is this life, why waste yours expending so much energy on what everyone else is doing? Just food for thought, not trying to attack you, so don't get overly defensive, I'm just hoping that you'll pick up a more laissez faire attitude about other people's religious beliefs.

that was a great post, and i hate to do it but i really have just got to nitpick at that mind comment. i have no idea where it came from but the notion that we only use X% of the mind/brain is just plain wrong. seriously, just look at any old fMRI scan, the whole damn thing is functional.

I stand corrected. After poking around a little online I found this reputable article from the magazine "Scientific American." Here's the link if you're interested:
<!-- m -->http://www.scientificamerican.com/artic ... t-of-brain<!-- m -->
It seems as if Mr. Albert Einstein is to blame for the myth's beginning, as he used it to explain how he was so intelligent, (ie, that he uses more than the average man)
The article does specify though that although we use all of it throughout the day, it is not used concurrently, so maybe there's a splinter of truth in the woodpile of the myth there.
