Bought a new desktop. Specs included

Post by Grudge »

Hey so it's been 15 years since I purchased a PC just for gaming, and back then since I was a student I was only able to get a mid-range one.

Here are the specs of the PC I just bought (prime day discounts + microcenter awesomeness), with costs before taxes.

CPU: Ryzen 3600 / $199.99
Motherboard: Gigabyte x470 Ultra Gaming / $99.99
GPU: RTX 2070 Super / $529.99
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 16 GB 2x8 / $67.99
Harddrive: Samsung 860 Evo SSD 1 TB / $129.99
Power: EVGA 650 W Gold Semi Modular / $99.99
Monitor: Dell S2716DGR 144 Hz Gsynch / $339.99 (open box, almost new)
Case: NZXT H500i Black / $96.99
Keyboard: Logitech G413 / $64

Before tax $1,619 / after tax $1,753

I am ready to rock and roll with this thing in a couple of weeks after assembling.

Sticky mouses will be in need of cleaning soonly.

All kidding aside, you should be able to run quite a few games for a few years until you have to replace the video card and processor.

This will last me a good five years of high graphics gaming. Then I'll sell it for $400 or something.

That's true. I used to do a tonne of CPU gaming but keeping up with all the upgrades was hitting me hard in the pocket book so I quit. I bet quake and doom will run exceptionally well for ya.

I'm kinda curious how classic WOW reissue would run on a system like yours, but that's neither here nor there.

sheeeit, 2070, that will hold up for a time to come. my current build is just over 4 years old now, holding out until next summer to rebuild.

It's not 2070, it's 2070 super, which is a newly released card closer to 2080, or almost identical to 1080 ti.

that's a solid build, better than my computers

I would throw in a mechanical hard drive though, you'd be surprised how fast your ssd will fill up

yeah definitely agree, big mechanical storage is dirt cheap and OS footprint + steam library will rip thru a 1TB drive in no time.

When I bought my PC last November, I bought a WD Black 1 TB HDD just for games, thinking that was enough. Boy, was I wrong.

I don't have white people problems of running out of space because I'm not putting everything I ever bought on it. At most I install a few games and that's it - as much as I need to and no more. If I run out of space, I delete the games I don't play. I don't ever plan on getting an SUV for the same reason, just because every damn American feels they need one.

I don't have any other content that takes up much space either. I can certainly easily let a year go by before requiring additional space, so I could easily just buy a mechanical drive next year in the discount season.

Considering it's been 15 years since you built a PC, you may want to disable auto-defrag for your SSD.

I was thinking about this topic. I wrote this 7 years ago. My PC specs are still holding strong. Obviously I would not be able to play the very latest games at the highest graphics, but 7 years later this is still doing a great job.

computers last a lot longer in modern times which is really nice - mine is about 4 or 5 years old and i can still play everything i want

i built my partner a computer last year for about $2000 dollars, the same parts today are closer to $4000 :oldryan: i have no idea when my next upgrade will be, it could be years out if these prices hold

Though I've got a new PC, I still have my bricked Ryzen 5 2600/1660ti rig and it's just collecting dust at the corner of my room. It does have a Noctua NH D15 Chromax Black cooler and I don't intend to throw that away at once as I'm thinking I can repurpose that for a new PC. It's only recently that I discovered that there's not much difference betwen AM4 and AM5 brackets. :wall:

PC prices here in PK have been extra devastating due to inflation and dollar kicking our ass. The AI crunch hasn't helped matters.

Anyway, I also have a Ryzen 3600x, paired with an RTX 3060 12GB. Need that extra VRAM. Was really handicapped on my prior GPU, which was an AMD Sapphire Nitro RX 590, 8 GB.

I have a 7 year old gaming laptop that still runs most games and programs just fine - luckily went big on the vfx and ram when I bought it so it was a bit future-proofed. Also have a mini bookshelf computer that I use mostly for streaming, surprisingly will even run some games without issue.

I dread the day I need to replace my laptop, that shit is gonna hurt. But as was said, at least pc’s seem to last a bit longer than they used to.

Got rid of the mac and bought my first desktop in like 12+ years. One of those mini intel skull-branded PC's with the new ARC graphics. Should be miles ahead of anything I've ever had and it was cheap. :xx:

I know. :redneck: I used to really like my 2016 MBP, but these new limitations with scrapple silicon and the new OS suck a whole bunch of ass. Couldn't even play 25 year old games with stable framerates because they kneecapped 32-bit translation layers. And the OS is buggier than fucking windows now. It failed at copying and pasting basic folders from an external drive, had to use the freaking terminal to do it. Not a stranger to it as a linux nerd but that's just plain unacceptable on a $2k+ name brand computer. Options/spotlight search bar would stop working randomly, wtf.

I still have a linuxed-up lenovo laptop with a killer 3k@90hz screen running just fine. 5 years on it and the battery still holds up for like 7-8hrs but it does crash playing some games occasionally. I was gonna replace it with a newer linux certified laptop instead of a desktop, but prices are insane and they seem to be lowering the specs cause of AI BS. Frameworks and the new lenovos with the same ram/storage/screen quality I have now cost more than that $2200 MBP I returned.

Probably just gonna get a beater used lenovo or system76 when my current laptop kicks the bucket, ended up with a nice bit of fuck you money since the desktop only ran me $1k.

I'm riding with fedora kde. Least painful experience ever, everything worked out of the box. Just some weird scaling issues with some VST's in reaper cause of wine.

Audio has made massive strides in the last few years, check out the subreddit linuxaudio. I have reaper working with drumkit vst's (ugritone, and a free clone of ezdrummer called MT powerdrumkit) as well as several windows VST's which run via a wine layer (yabridge). All my Focusrite 4i4 interface features work too, I just use outboard analog preamps and record direct or via mic inputs.

Now Fedora 44 happened to break yabridge but there's a workaround apparently. I'm still on 43. But having a windows desktop now I have no real reason to deal with that. Nice on an old laptop that can't handle windows 11 though.

i'll have to look into that, though i do like the separate of machines right now. i've been using a cracked version of addictive drums for years, i don't even know what's out there these days. i did start paying for cubase :redneck:

my focusrite just stopped powering on recently, i splurged and got the audient id14 which was probably a waste because i don't know what i'll use it for other than vocals. i used to run the axe fx into the focusrite but now i'm using it as its own interface.
