I think he means this, specifically.
This sounds about as unnecessary as a 4 year degree in communications.

I have no problem with getting a better idea of the economics of extreme music and where to draw the lines between artistic intent and whether the product is at all marketable.

But that other thing is clearly just a self-important get together that's supposed to seem academic, as if anything worthwhile will come out of it.
I understand what you're getting at. I don't see anything wrong with looking at extreme metal, or any genre of music for that matter in an "academic" (for lack of a better word) way. However, I would agree that some of these things do cross a line where the academic aspect becomes an end, rather than the means of understanding the music in another way.

First Mithras album have a really cool Covenant-vibe going on the with the rough production and the sludgy 7string riffing. Awesome album :xx:

Our live guitarist at the time actually told me off as he thought 'Wrath Of God' was too much like Bal-Sagoth!

i can think of a lot of comparisons that would make sense, but bal-sagoth isn't within ten miles of making that list :redneck:

I love forever advancing legions. sloping alters and vae solis ftw !. Also tomb of kings, arena sands, as the wind blows... the list goes on. A truly wondeful album. Was that Leon macey posting just a moment ago? This forum is awesome. I get to hang out with the stars of death metal :ba: :bang:

Someone just recommended me the band Psypheria on LastFM. He described them as Morbid Angel, Mithras and Nocturnus in a blender. I'm just listening to a few tracks and I see where he's coming from.

If I am not mistaken, that's a former band of Shredlord, a MA poster. IIRC they made an Immortal Rites cover, but with added keyboards. I remember enjoying it very much.

I am the Dragon. And you call me insane. You are privy to a great becoming, but you recognize nothing. To me, you are a slug in the sun. You are an ant in the afterbirth. It is your nature to do one thing correctly: Before me, you rightly tremble. But, fear is not what you owe me. You owe me awe.
