or are we talking about intentionally spreading misinformation in order to manipulate a viewpoint/opinion?

i'm thinking more like lying to take advantage of someone for personal benefit. if they found out it would potential ruin/damage your relationship (co-workers, boss, etc). although if they never found out, they'd never know or be affected by it.

Lying? Yeah.

Manipulation? That depends. If I do it in a strategic way without hurting the other, making them think it's actually their plan which will benefit a greater cause, no problem.

This is all based in ego. Good or bad.
