Hey so it's been 15 years since I purchased a PC just for gaming, and back then since I was a student I was only able to get a mid-range one.

Here are the specs of the PC I just bought (prime day discounts + microcenter awesomeness), with costs before taxes.

I am ready to rock and roll with this thing in a couple of weeks after assembling.

Sticky mouses will be in need of cleaning soonly.

All kidding aside, you should be able to run quite a few games for a few years until you have to replace the video card and processor.

That's true. I used to do a tonne of CPU gaming but keeping up with all the upgrades was hitting me hard in the pocket book so I quit. I bet quake and doom will run exceptionally well for ya.

I'm kinda curious how classic WOW reissue would run on a system like yours, but that's neither here nor there.

sheeeit, 2070, that will hold up for a time to come. my current build is just over 4 years old now, holding out until next summer to rebuild.

It's not 2070, it's 2070 super, which is a newly released card closer to 2080, or almost identical to 1080 ti.

I would throw in a mechanical hard drive though, you'd be surprised how fast your ssd will fill up

yeah definitely agree, big mechanical storage is dirt cheap and OS footprint + steam library will rip thru a 1TB drive in no time.

When I bought my PC last November, I bought a WD Black 1 TB HDD just for games, thinking that was enough. Boy, was I wrong.

I don't have white people problems of running out of space because I'm not putting everything I ever bought on it. At most I install a few games and that's it - as much as I need to and no more. If I run out of space, I delete the games I don't play. I don't ever plan on getting an SUV for the same reason, just because every damn American feels they need one.

I don't have any other content that takes up much space either. I can certainly easily let a year go by before requiring additional space, so I could easily just buy a mechanical drive next year in the discount season.

Live within your means, Americans. You waste too much food, take up more space than you need, spend more than you need. Learn from us Asians.

I was thinking about this topic. I wrote this 7 years ago. My PC specs are still holding strong. Obviously I would not be able to play the very latest games at the highest graphics, but 7 years later this is still doing a great job.

computers last a lot longer in modern times which is really nice - mine is about 4 or 5 years old and i can still play everything i want

i built my partner a computer last year for about $2000 dollars, the same parts today are closer to $4000 i have no idea when my next upgrade will be, it could be years out if these prices hold

AI has changed the equation

people talk about the ai bubble bursting and things going back to normal but i don't really see it happening - it will just shift in some new shitty direction and things will stay shitty

Though I've got a new PC, I still have my bricked Ryzen 5 2600/1660ti rig and it's just collecting dust at the corner of my room. It does have a Noctua NH D15 Chromax Black cooler and I don't intend to throw that away at once as I'm thinking I can repurpose that for a new PC. It's only recently that I discovered that there's not much difference betwen AM4 and AM5 brackets.

PC prices here in PK have been extra devastating due to inflation and dollar kicking our ass. The AI crunch hasn't helped matters.

Anyway, I also have a Ryzen 3600x, paired with an RTX 3060 12GB. Need that extra VRAM. Was really handicapped on my prior GPU, which was an AMD Sapphire Nitro RX 590, 8 GB.

I have a 7 year old gaming laptop that still runs most games and programs just fine - luckily went big on the vfx and ram when I bought it so it was a bit future-proofed. Also have a mini bookshelf computer that I use mostly for streaming, surprisingly will even run some games without issue.

I dread the day I need to replace my laptop, that shit is gonna hurt. But as was said, at least pc’s seem to last a bit longer than they used to.

it's all part of the plan to remove pc ownership, soon enough you'll only be able to rent a computer

yep, that's the future, stripped down PCs and local-first is going to be an expensive privilege
