Is it safe to drive 12 hours?

We regularly drive from California to Louisiana

My recommendation limit it to 12 hours a day sleepy driving is just as dangerous as drunk driving

I can’t drive but I know that’s my dads limit

Your dad drove 12 hours straight?

I've only ever driven max 9 hours in a day I think.

Yes that’s the limit to safely do it for him

It’s over 2500 miles (about 30 hours of driving) the first day he always does 12

I go with them to help with my brother driving is necessary because he can’t fly

I've gone from Seattle to Virginia Beach over the course of a few days.

Outside of that my max is in that 8-10 hour gay man's telescope. I hit some combination of tired, uncomfortable or bored and need to be out of the fucking car.

when I moved recently. 1700 miles - well over 30 hours of driving but spread it out over 5 days because I was traveling with animals and also didn't want to spend more than 6/7 hours in the car at any given time.

I wouldn't risk driving 12 hours at once unless I planned on sleeping in the car.

california to georgia, 2400 miles

intended to do it in six days because i was traveling with our pets

the fourth night i was tired of being away so i got up at four in the morning and drove from clinton tx to marietta ga, 781 miles in all

stopped for gas in ruston louisiana, birthplace of karl malone

stopped again in tuscaloosa alabama and witnessed a car accident

made it in twelve hours; special thanks to adderall

I saw Adderall in your note and thought, that's a fine idea, until I looked it up and saw that it's a prescription drug.

I have the awful task of driving 1,090 miles, two times in a span of a few weeks on those weekends. I'm trying to save on moving costs. So that means I need to first drive my car from Phoenix to Dallas, store it somewhere, then get on a plane back to Phoenix. Then sometime later, get on the U-Haul and drive that to Dallas too.

Number one cause of truck drivers getting in accidents is from lack of sleep - and they drive for a living! I know that after about 8 hours I am just done - especially if there is not much to look at while driving. No amount of cawfee / energy drinks will help you when you’re quite literally exhausted.

I worked for a company that supplied hours of service products for trucking companies, so I know about the rules for truck drivers.

That being said, I'm in a mood to drive up to 10 hours, starting early in the day.

drove through indiana once, probably the most boring place i've seen so far

when I planned out my road trip I made the decision early on to avoid Indiana at all cost - even if it meant adding more time on to the drive.

luckily it turned out to be a moot point.

but still.

illinois is full of stunning geographic variety and people who think the midwest looks boring lack geological perspective, imagination, or both

so there :occifer:

Flat, hills, desert, snow it’s all beautiful in its own way, except Mississippi that’s a nasty state.

I'll admit seeing the 280 foot windmills along the highway was pretty neat. the landscape itself was nothing to write home about -though I will say Wisconsin and Kentucky were quite beautiful. :santq:

longest in a single stretch was probably 16ish hours from SC to MA, between 800-900 miles. hit some heinous traffic in VA/DC/MD. longest was MA to nola but we split that into 2 days so it wasn't too bad.

What's wild is that plenty of people drive from Pennsylvania and incest adventure park to do some shit ass government work everyday.

If the US decided to move all the government shit to the west coast the entire state of Maryland would like like a 3rd world country.

Have you seen LA lately? Parts of San Francisco? California is a third world country.

twelve hours is just fine, any more is pushing it. i do a lot of long drives, all over the world, and i much prefer to wake at sunrise and leave ASAP before anything else, drive all the daylight hours and avoid night driving
