SO...Been working in the wine industry for a little more than a decade. Small retail, no benefits, no paid time off. You show up to work, you get paid. Work schedule for that time has always been nights, weekends, holidays. Mostly Wed-Sun 12-9pm/2-10pm kinda deal. Busted my ass, went above and beyond. Capped out at $20/hr...mostly because I don't want to be a manager. Almost started a store with a fellating lover, but there had been too many delays and then I found a fellating lover, and decided on a different career path and did not want to move to the official city of the chicago cubs.
I just got accepted into a software engineering program, which is Mon-Fri 9-5, and they have job placement etc.
I can't even express how relieved and happy I feel. It's been a LONG time coming. I'm so sick and tired of sacrificing prime social time as well as all holidays. I can't even say how many times I have told people "no" to plans because I got out of work too late. And like....I needed the paycheck. It wasn't until a few years ago, I paid off my student loans, all personal debt, and started a retirement account. And now that I made all those sacrifices to do those things, I can FINALLY move on to a new chapter in my life.
I'm just so fucking glad. Found this out WHILE I was on a trip in the Catskills, thus made the trip that much nicer.

i also did retail for a few years, from 18yrs old to 21yrs, but i wasn't bitter about it, i think i got out at the right time. also i was hungover most of the time so hard to differentiate that mental suffering from the actual work.
it has its benefits but i didn't like having constantly sore feet, that's what i remember also
hope your new job kicks the ass, remote working is awesome, and best if you have a nice place. if you live in a shitty place and neighbourhood it is definitely less appealing than if you have good surrounds for walks at lunchtime, a nice view at your desk, etc. you can fully customise your desk and work arrangement when at home which i like

$70K is actually pretty decent, not quite entry level in that it's a little better than entry level. The entry level salaries I'm aware of that hire inexperienced candidates fresh out of college with an undergrad degree can be as low as $60 K.
$35 K is also decent if this is something like an internship that will convert into a more permanent role. It will afford a good standard of living, drinks and fun as long as you rein in the expenses. Many years ago, I had an internship for $20 an hour and I was able to have a lot of fun.
You're going to be living the good life in a year or so when they hire you at close to double that. If you end up doing great at your job half way through the year, don't hesitate to ask for a raise.

ah yea, 60k sounds a bit more accurate- im probably off on my number a bit- people I've talked to who are in the industry have given me different ranges. Regardless, I make 35k now. So even 60k would be a VAST improvement for me. Hell, even 50k. A good salary + remote working and stuff like are definite appeals.
Definitely CAN live off of 35k a year (yes, even in NY), but it can take some sacrifice...or control

congrats on the career change. been working retail on the management side for a few years now - for a while I thought I might open a bar/music venue if I ever decided to get out but at the same time feeling like i'm too old for that shit. perhaps one day if I come into a large sum of money and am able to hire someone else to do all the day to day operation stuffs.
