Pretty eventful day today. I met with Skinner today. Then on the way home, I was the victim of a hit and run. While I was at a stop on a red light, a car from behind smashed my car, which made me hit the car in front of me. That took off the back bumper, dislocated the exhaust and the front bonnet is crumpled up. By the time I got out of my car with my camera, the asshole had already fled. However, a couple of witnesses saw it and chased the vehicle. Miraculously the witnesses photographed the douchebag's license plate, not to mention his Honda emblem had come off and fallen on my car. The vice squad have apparently found his vehicle, but not the person, yet.

Yea I'm OK, I had the seat belt on. But the car I drove in on isn't road worthy now, until repairs. I'll call up the insurance company tomorrow, thankfully it had full collision coverage and it was totally the other person's fault.

I need some advice on how to handle the insurance. I'm being offered the option to get the vehicle repaired and they will cover the costs. But I'm also hearing that the insurance company can just flat out give me money and I can do whatever I want with it. Is this true?

depends on whether your car is financed. if you have a lien, your lender will probably require that you repair it

Yes, do you think I should pay off the vehicle (only a little left and I can afford it), and then claim the full insurance value in cash?

i guess my question is, whats the advantage of taking a check directly over having the cost of repairs covered? the car doesn't sound driveable, but it's not a total loss. are you ultimately going to fix it anyway?

I'm going to have the repairs assessed, if it turns out the cost of repairs is more than the market value of the vehicle, they will give me the cash straight up.

My car would have technically been a total loss if insurance had paid for it. Luckily the moving company ended up just paying out of pocket for the repairs (plus the rental I told them I would need while it was in the shop). Two weeks and $7k later I got my used car back looking brand new. Get them to pay for that shit and then pay off your car.

A f.riend gave that recommendation as well - he suggested I get a chiropractor diagnosis. But I don't want to go down that route. It could turn into a long adventure and I like my keeping my life simple.

if you need a crank to give you a bogus diagnosis i guess a chiropractor would definitely fit the bill

if you're really gonna do that though you should probably lean into it as hard as you fucking can. there's no sense going half measure on a completely phony medical diagnosis intended to defraud an otherwise innocent douchebag and his completely corrupt insurance provider

Additional piece of information, I did call up a few lawyers looking to see what my options were to sue, but no body wanted to take up my case because I wasn't injured. There wouldn't be money to be made for the lawyers otherwise.

Finally, I got my car back after repairs. I hope that the person who rear ended me goes to hell. Total $8000+ of repairs, with $1000 out of pocket. Way too much to spending on a late afternoon with Skinner.

Thank you Noyka. This was more painful than I expected. And it wasn't even my fault. Drive safely, put cameras in your vehicles, because there are too many animals out there driving recklessly.
