so is facebook really fucked up and gone forever or is this just hot gossip and wishful thinking

people who have tech things in their bios keep saying that facebook's DNS record has been wiped from its root servers, and i know fuck all about what that means but it doesn't sound jolly good

there's no way it would actually go away forever, they spend unimaginable amounts of money on redundancy and backups. there's no telling what happened today when you factor in the recent whistleblower thing. they could have used the blackout to burn some evidence or something

dns is basically like a listing in phone book, it's just pointing you to facebooks servers, they can be modified

google is still doing redundant backups on actual tape drives, pretty crazy

it's actually funny that facebook was down world wide today, the internet started as a way for the military to keep a line of communication running if traditional communication went down. ideally if facebook goes down you'd get rerouted to the next available server but something was clearly fucked here

Only reason i gave a shit was freebies on my two app thingies. I loathe social media and the petty drama imvolved.

fun fact, ARPANET's continuity-of-government applications were mostly a happy coincidence (and didn't last long either; a separate dedicated communications network was established early on in the reagan administration).

the original purpose actually was for counterinsurgency and surveillance in vietnam and domestically; in the former case i believe it was an operational component of the phoenix program. domestically it was in use as early as the late 60s, likely either as a supplement to COINTELPRO, or for similar subversion and infiltration efforts undertaken separately by the military. i would have to go back on some reading material from a few years ago to get the details 100% right, but that is the actual real-deal internet origin story

These tech companies definitely need to be regulated to curb their power.
