Wagyu philly cheesesteak sandwiches, wagyu italian beef, wagyu beef rice, wagyu beef and wanton noodles, etc. etc...I even saw 'wagyu beef stew' at one point.

There's just too many of these 'wagyu'-based dishes all around now and most of the time, these are quite seasoned enough that you don't really taste or feel the wagyu quality anymore. This also applies to instances where you see 'A1 grade' beef or the like on the menu and the dish in question is something that is heavily seasoned.

Now don't get me wrong, I love wagyu beef but just as the plain steak itself. And yes, I do think the premium price for wagyu beef is justified but only if it's served as steak. For dishes claiming to have 'wagyu beef', I feel it's all just a scam - not that different from the whole 'organic' food movement that most of the time just makes the food expensive than it should be.

yeah wagyu is great but doing anything with it other than just making a fucking wagyu steak out of it is a total waste

and similarly i would hazard a guess that 90+% of the places doing these silly "wagyu" dishes are just naming it that to extract the premium price. at least in the US there's zero regulation around what you can and can't call wagyu, so it's ripe for abuse.

It is no different than the kobe fad/scam a few years ago in the us. You are correct about the no regulation thing quite a lot of scams in the food world.

For my anniversary the other day we went to a high end Japanese restaurant and actually did have wagyu - it was served nigiri style and lightly cooked with a blowtorch, it was absolutely fantastic. also had tons and tons of sushi (all the fish was imported from japan), unlike anything I've ever tasted. probably the most expensive meal my wife and I have ever indulged in.

that said, anything else out there claiming to be wagyu - it ain't it. it's too bad Japan hasn't gone after these fraudsters.

The few times I've had it, it's been good. I don't go for steak often due to the adverse health effects of red meat.
