Dimmu Borgir is actually the name of a place in Iceland that's supposedly the portal to hell. :grimsanta:

It's also the place where all the current information on Norse mythology comes from. Both of the main sources, the Prose and Poetic Eddas, were compiled there in the 13th century.

It's a cool ass place. :gay:

The only setbacks for me was a little dust on my car one morning.

Grimsvötn: Grímur´s(a mans name, meaning mask) Lake

as for portals to hell we have a few of them , the main being :

<!-- m -->http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hekla<!-- m -->

p.s where did you read that snorra edda , heimskringlan and such are from dimmu borgir which is a small lava field out in the country?

would like to see that source. Snorri Sturluson the supposed author of one of the manuscripts f.i lived in Reykholt in west iceland while dimmu borgir is on the other side of the island. dont want to be a dick but it the statement is similar to saying that the bible was written in a little cave by one hard-on bearer when in reality its origins are fuzzy at best. fun subject to debate.

I think thats more than enough icelandophilia for now.

Shit, I worded that incorrectly, I meant Iceland in general when I said that, not that they were both the same place :santa:

You are correct, the etymology of the word Edda itself has been a mystery and was thougth for a while to be an old Norse word that meant grandmother, but then was discovered it was a possible placename.

It's not even known for sure that Snorri compiled the Poetic Edda, because he certainly didn't write it. He only wrote the Prose Edda and quoted the Poetic Edda heavily in the process.
