tl/dr This is the first time we've found an earth-sized planet within the habitable zone of a star system. This is a giant win for science.

Kepler 22B is 2.4 times Earth's radius and we don't even know if it has any notable atmosphere or if it is even solid. While Kepler 22B is a great discovery in that it is relatively similar in size to Earth and it sits in the Goldilocks Zone of its star (making it a prime candidate for liquid water), there is far too much exaggeration about it going on right now.

So it could just be a big ball of uninhabitable gas?

I do. I'm just happy we're getting somewhere. Maybe, at some point in the next few decades, we'll be able to drop the bomb on all the creationists who think the Earth is the center of the universe.

I'm waiting for Voyager 1 to leave the Heliosphere and enter interstellar space.

Evidence never fazes those people.

Even if it is solid and has a palatable atmosphere, it's 2.4x Earth in size (and probably overall mass) so its gravity is going to likely be too much for humans.



Of course we could mine it, but that being remotely feasible is so far down the road, I sard.

I just want to watch them stumble trying to rationalize that alien plants don't need Jesus.

Bitchez dont know about this planet's unobtainium.

What I mean is that the idea amongst theists that we are "God's children" is generally pretty highly psychologically dependent on us being unique in the universe. I've watched Christians squirm over the idea of aliens for years.

I find it weird that anyone would think this or any other discovery would shake a religious person's belief. It's not like there's any shortage of flaws in their "reasoning" as it is. Yet they persist.
