The woman obviously knows very little about the substances her agency imprisons people for using and selling. But it's not like the people at the DEA actually want a viable answer to the drug question, given how quickly they'd be out of a job if one was allowed to be taken seriously.

You think that's genuine ignorance? It sounds like intentional avoidance, to me. She never actually answered the question.

'Are meth, crack and heroin worse than pot?'

'Drugs are bad, mmmkay?'

I wouldn't be at all surprised if she really is that stupid. She probably got her position through a combination of nepotism and an unconditional willingness to do and think as she's told. Basically your run of the mill bureaucrat.

Hang the bitch.

"I dunno, I just do my job ruining lives and destroying careers and futures, cramming prisons full of non-criminals, wasting money and resources on stings and roundups that could otherwise be directed towards control of pharmaceuticals and narcotics. Drugs are bad. Mkay?"

show her two red pens, one of which is clearly and undeniably darker than the other. Q: Is this pen darker than the other? A: Both of them are red.

Even taxing the shit out of drugs seems strange to me. If public health doesn't suddenly nosedive and if the enormous task of enforcing all those drug laws no longer exists, then why would the government even need more money in exchange for legalization?

The taxation argument has always struck me as a reluctant agreement on the public's behalf to hand over extra money in order to not be arrested for using.

Or you could just not tax the shit out of it.

In this case an amazingly expensive and idiotic government program would suddenly no longer exist, and you expect to raise additional money from the people as a result of the absence of those laws. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

I agree that it would never happen, and if it did for whatever reason it would be taxed to a degree that would probably make it just as expensive as it is now.

All I'm saying is that I find it strange that there's a general consensus that some kind of payoff to the government needs to take place in order for legalization to occur. In the case of marijuana it doesn't seem very fair. Same goes for booze, which I pay a lot of money for in taxes each year despite having a spotless criminal/driving record, along with health insurance.

I know, but it's frustrating for me since I really don't use any government services that aren't priced specifically for usage (e.g. car taxes).

Plus my state actually made me fill out paperwork to pay $1 in taxes based on my wages, despite having already had money taken out of my paycheck all year. The processing fees must have easily exceeded the extra amount I put in. It's pretty funny to think about now, but at the time it was insulting for how frivolous it was.

That about wraps things up. Good discussion everyone  :redneck:

so you've never used the roads, 911, schools, or hospitals? cool i'm moving 300 miles east!

I pay road taxes when I buy gas and renew my tabs. The property taxes I pay for schools are fixed in my rent. I've never had to call 911, and I pay for all my medical needs up front and through health insurance.

"legalize" is a pretty broad term. now, if you had said "decriminalize and tax everything" we'd be on to something entirely different[/quote]

I'm not even going to bother reading whatever silly argument anyone makes against this statement before posting my heartfelt agreement with it.

Then you missed out on a pretty lengthy exchange over how the taxation of certain drugs is basically theft, or at the very least unfair to people who choose to drink or smoke but don't happen to drink soda or eat fast food (two arbitrarily non-taboo vices).

No, I read it all after. I'm still with the Skinny one.

But why? To be honest I don't think I would want my state and my state alone to have legalized drugs because it would soon be overrun by lowlifes. On the other hand it strikes me as unfair to raise tax revenue off the backs of smokers of pot/tobacco and drinkers of alcohol even though the lifestyle of plenty of other people costs society a shitload of money as well but goes under the radar. The whole scheme seems childish to me.

I realize the options I mention conflict and neither is ideal. I just don't know which environment I'd rather live in, because it's basically one or the other as far as I can see.

I think it's just wishful thinking on my behalf - the idea of a perfect medium between responsible drug use and the social backlash it may cause if things do get out of hand. But I will say that I would never want to live somewhere like Las Vegas or Amsterdam where drug/sex tourists congregate, and I imagine any distinctly permissive legalization in the U.S. would involve pilot programs that would cause this sort of thing and distort what would probably take place on a wide scale if it were allowed.
