I've read a few things about Australia having tons of spiders just about everywhere, is this true? Is it a household problem or anything like that?

Huntsmans look scary, but it's like an ant bite when they get you.
Spiders are everywhere down south. If someone has a backyard there'll be some there and probably a few redbacks hiding under things. You learn early on not to reach under any objects in a backyard without rolling them over first.
Two or three times a year a spider of considerable size can find its way into your house, necessitating a smack with a newspaper.
Look out anyone comin' over they'll fucken KILL YA.

Read Bill Bryson's Notes From a Sunburned Country. It's an informative and often hilarious book about his travels throughout Australia. He has several comments about the hideous and venomous spiders, snakes, jellyfish, etc. that inhabit Australia. A most fascinating book. It's great as a book on tape, too, as he makes a wonderful narrator.
