Has Trey lost his guitar/Song writing skills?

is this the reason why F-G-H arent played live? some shows his leads sound crystal clear and great...others i just cringe and get depressed that my all time hero has possibly lost his skill!
the rhythm on the new album sounds tight and punchy, his leads on nevermore and existo vulgore are really cool too. what happened to him at Scion? all the songs sounded great but then towards the end(GoE and some other shit) sounded honestly like crap. GoE was a nightmare. what happened? least in GoE he had no headbanging going on and even stood straight up when he should have been swamp melting. he was hitting the wrong notes too. does anyone know what the hell happened? lets see what happens tomorrow in singapore. (there roughly 13 hours behind us so we wont find out till tomorrow)

I don't know how he could go about writing a record as ambitious as Heretic to something like Illud. There were so many cool concepts on Heretic, I love it so much.
I don't think he's lost his skills, if anything he has lost his creative drive. I think we'll get a clearer picture on the matter once new interviews with him start filtering in.

I don't think he lost his skills or his creative drive, it has just shifted obviously. I know guitar players who used to play the craziest death metal, but then got tired of it, went on to play jazz and blues, and just can't get that technicality back that death metal demanded from them.

I got a few:
1. Bad rehearsal.
2. Bad monitor mixer.
3. Simply a major fuck up.

Maybe, who knows. Frankly, I don't give a shit either. If he doesn't like metal anymore, hey no problem! To each his own. But start a new band or project then and don't befoul Morbid Angel's name with this crap. Same goes for mr. Vincent.

I've been thinking that maybe the reason why Illud has turned out like it has is because they don't play the F, G and H material live. I think Morbid Angel's biggest influence has always been Morbid Angel. It seems like, upon until now, Trey was always trying to build upon, and better, the material that had gone before. The thing is, the set they've been playing for the last five years consists of old(er) material which he's already been inspired by.
Maybe by playing the same songs live since David returned has contributed to his apparent "loss" of skills, since he's not challenging himself anymore.

With the concepts he played with on Heretic, I often wondered where he'd go next and how he'd expand upon them as he has in the past.

I already explained what happened:
...Nowadays, critique can be given to David Vincent's appearance, but I understand that his presence practically saved Morbid Angel: Trey was so into techno parties with his gf and doing drugs, that his playing became sloppy, while we all know that Pete had a hard time fighting the backpain and performing. David is the dominant personality that leads the band on.
Trey used to be the hard-on bearer that didn't attend parties and was practically glued to the guitar. Because of his former girlfriend, he did an 180 and partied with lots of drugs; that's probably the reason why he looks so washed up nowadays and the reason he only had material for 3 songs: he just wasn't interested in playing / composing on his guitar anymore and if one doesn't keep practicing, high level playing can't be maintained, only the stuff that comes automatically because of years of playing; the same goes for the old stuff nowadays Metallica plays; they can't compose it anymore, only be a coverband of themselves.

Yes, if women get opinions, humanity is doomed.
Thankfully, that relationship has been over for awhile and my hope lies in some trigger that might occur that would re-ignite his creative drive; I'm sure Pete will kick his ass in the right direction when he's able to tour again.

I didn't know about Treys ex and their partying/drug use. What was he on? I'm assuming the typical rave drugs (pretty much anything created by Alexander Shulgin lol). Sad to hear.
That pretty much confirms my belief that Trey hasn't necessarily lost his skills as much as he just doesn't have the motivation or inspiration to write the music he used to. Maybe his belief in ancient astronaut theories/Annunaki has dwindled. That seemed to be his driving force. I remember an interview (can't remember from where or for what album though I think it was Heretic) he even went as far as saying his music was a gift to the Annunaki to appease them so they wouldn't use him as a slave.

That's why I have an immense amount of respect for Pete. He's obviously done his fair amount of drugs and partying but nothing gets in the way of his drumming.
This ihas probably been posted before but I love the part in Choosing Death where Vincent talks about when Pete first joined the band:
"He came in and got right to work" says Vincent. "The hard-on bearer is literally the hardest-working person I have ever been in a band with. When he came to us he could not play double bass. Trey and I are good coaches, we showed him the math of what he needed to do, and he went down into our practice place and taught himself how to do it, just went on and on. We'd go to work, we'd come home from work, we wouldn't hear any noise, all the lights would be off, and we'd go down to the space - it was like a basement underneath the house - and there would be Pete passed out on the floor in a puddle of his own sweat. We'd say, 'Dude, are you all right?'
And he'd say, 'Oh, gotta get back to work. Gotta get back to work.' Ande he'd just sit up there going dit-da-dit-da-dit-da-dit-da for hours and hours at a time. And within two months he was going sick."
Now that, is dedication.
Sorry for going off topic.

On those amazon samples I can't hear nothing but pure imagination in Trey's riffs/sounds. Those out of space sounds that he makes with guitar on Too Extreme, Destructos VS Earth and Profundis-Mea Culpa are GODLY INSANE!
For me, he AGAIN totally challenged himself in guitar playing, because his style doesn't remind me of any other band (except Morbid Angel) and it's got THE FLOW set to MAXIMUM!
Again a New Extreme has been set, as with all the previous albums.
I feel Trey has so much skills that he could convert any style of music into a pure Morbid Angel song and that song would also be considered great among people who aren't into death metal but rather enjoy the style of music from which Trey was inspired (for example - ambiental/industrial/classical/hardcore techno/groovy-southern/doomy-sludgy, ...).
I don't know any other guitarist/band in whole musical spectrum that is so UNIVERSAL! And for this you need LOTS of skills
For example, these songs - God Of Emptiness, Where The Slime Live, Nothing Is Not, At One With Nothing and Enshrined By Grace - these are phenomenal songs with tons of felling & groove and I'm sure a lot of people who are into more groove oriented music (nu-metal of all kinds) also enjoy in this songs. In a way Trey/Morbid Angel started the 90's nu-metal style on MTV in 1993 with God Of Emptiness video and his than-fresh, downtuned 7 string Ibanez guitar. They were sometimes even mentioned as an influence by some of the big bands in nu-metal.
On the new Illud album there are also new groovy songs (I Am Morbid/10 More Dead/Radikult) which for me are totally MA, just different as every previuos album, but I know people into ''nu-metal'' will also enjoy in this, because it's universal and skilfull
And i'm sure that Pete is behind Trey's musical ideas 100%, as was he in 1989, so is he in 2011! They are both Insane Gods!

Man i've tried to say everything in civilised manner but tis is getting ridiculous.
I can see that this is a serious problem for you guys.
I have no problem with people liking something passionately. For the past 23 years i've listened, played along too, practically breathed MA. I just have a problem with people who say:
I hope no one will be ofended with my perception of Morbid Angel, because it's just MINE perception and I wish others to enjoy Morbid Angel in their own perception!
And then have a issue with folks who feel different.
Why are you afraid of Morbid Angel fan-atics, isn't this a place for MA fanatics?
Fanatisism on most levels is wrong or runs quickly out of hand, as nine out of ten times people loose grasp of the whole picture.
Why aren't you happy for your once favourite band in the universe to still have some very passionate fans around the world?
I am, and i still consider myself a big fan, I just do not am that psyched about the new stuff. I hope it sells big ammount so they will keep around for a while longer.
The way I feel is like some of you guys never were into Morbid Angel 100%
Hopefully not directed at me as i would take that as a big insult.
and now you seem to me like some impostor who just wants to ridicule everybody who is not into making jokes out of Morbid Angel.
This IS insulting. Ridiculing someone for liking something is stupid. And in my opinion, this did not happen. Some folks are massively disapoitet with what it out there so far. In return they get insulted as being no real fans. Everybody who did not like it spoke up and explained perfectly clear why. Agree or do not agree but basicly that is the end of the discussion on that point. But when something like that is said, the reviews for example, you start insulting them without any substance or arguments as to why you do not agree. YOU end up slandering. When confronted with that you start insulting folks here.
You can all puke together with lavaGhoul, I don't mind
As he is one person who proved to be a fan, this is again a stab in the back.
I am very respectfull of people who are not afraid to show how they feel, as i respect you like MA so much.
But you come off like a insulting asshole. Intended or not.

uni777 - the people that you are now covering their backs are the ones who who start with the insults, probably because they feel empowered by so many fellow dislikers of Illud album. In your vision lavaGhoul is a proved MA fan and can puke over other MA fans, while I am seen as a staber in the back, because I let him and others puke all over me
So far you've been one of the most reasonable MA fans here, even though you're not too fond of Illud. I hope you stay true to yourself and don't get to influenced by others opinion.
Now that I know the meaning of the word sycophant I also got to know that that's what some of Illud haters here are - pure sycophants - as they try to impress the obvious elite members on this forum with their hate wisdom.
This is an obvious game of - if I can't enjoy in new Morbid Angel, so will not you!

This is an obvious game of "I'm going to turn around every retort placed on me and thus enter into an endless cycle of making increasingly blind statements".
You're just saying you like Illud so you can feel empowered by the ones that also like Illud. You obviously didn't come to that conclusion on your own, and neither did anyone one else. They merely psychically anticipated that others would feel the same as them and thus validated in their opinions.
You are a sycophant, a yes man, in that you have stated multiple times you will like anything Morbid Angel does because it's Morbid Angel, which is a very general definition and does not mean anything.
Let's say you said you would like a house no matter what because it's a house. The house is knocked down. It's still a house, it's just not assembled anymore. Do you still like it? Do you still want to live in it?
You must be more specific, and this is where all of your arguments break down. All you can do is pull the "I'm rubber you're glue" and make increasingly vast generalizations in hopes to justify your claims.

This is by far the most idiotic statement of this year. Congrats on that.
Furthermore as this topic was about treys playing. It is obvious that he has not been working out on the guitar as he used to do. His reproductions of his own solos are pretty poor. All the shows i've seen since 2005 his awesome album leads gets substituted for easy ways out. All the amazing sweeps and arpergio's are omitted from them. And he messed up very often. I've seen them live since 89 and i'm not saying this to tick you off. Furthermore this is something a lot of other people have withnessed too.
By now i have seen them around 30 times and missed only about 6 Dutch shows since 89. Faboulous ones, good ones and not so good auto-pilot ones. I've noticed a definate decline.

I am all for discussion, but this is starting to be more and more insulting (all those remarks and idolatry). You know, people would get banned from this forum for a whole lot less in the past.
I am no mod by any means, but maybe bans are the only cure here.

by saying that you are just insulting MA.
One more thing, none of us ever said we hate Trey or we hate the band because of illud.
The point is for those, MA had great importance in the lives, this album has punched them in face.
