With the new album-release in sight, I can't help feeling nostalgic about the old days where the internet didn't rule the world. Morbid Angel were such masters in building suspense towards their releases. Simply by not giving us any details at all and totally hiding for the press. The day you bought a MA- album, it was unlikely that you had seen the artwork or read the lyrics or heard the new style beforehand. Let alone you had heard anything from the album.



It's been two months that we've discussed the titles, the songs, the artwork of "Illud" here on the board. Just imagine that we didn't know any of this stuff, untill next week. Man, you would buy the album and it would all come together with a BANG!!! You'd be fully blown away and left in awe by the masters of chaos!!! It was like that for me when I bought A-F. But ever since Gateways, we got informed or 'leaked' on all the details of the new release... something magical died for me since those days.



Don't get me wrong. I'll be buying 'Illud' this weekend and I'll feel like a f**king kid in a candy store... but I won't get that heavenly feeling anymore that overwhelmed me in the past. And that has nothing to do with the music, because I'm really glad MA finally came up with a highly controversial album (the most controversial since Blessed imo).



Call me an old nostalgic fool, but I'm pretty sure all of you who bought the albums in pre-internet days, will probably feel the same on the subject.

Most certainly:

When Domination came out i went to my local recordstore; the shipment of new goodies was late. Next day ; delayed! 4 days (too) later i got it, got on my wee li'll bike asap and cranked the fuck out of it in my parents livingroom. Neighbours screaming, bassdrums rumbling, tables tremble, all over awesomeness.



Right now im trying to keep myself from listening to the samples at all as to not spoil my own beshizzlement with I.

Mote it be, Sonic scourge i will become.

I think there is something of a dispelling of magic that comes from the internet age as a whole really. The sheer amount of access to things is mind blowing, all at the click of keys and the mouse. Even if I choose to ignore details on the net, I still feel that the uninformed and anticipated feeling is lost somewhat compared to the old days. I think it's shame.

That's just what's great about the internet nowadays. You rip the old albums first before you buy a cat in the hat. So you don't get

For me the internet has both a bad and a good solution for such a thing.



Good: you can first listen to an album, at home, not in a record store feeling under pressure to buy it, but just at home on your own good time. This way you can obviously judge if you're going to spend money on it or not.

Bad: there's a difference between listening to an album for the very first time, with the CD case, booklet with lyrics, recording information, thanks lists, and basically the real thing in your hands. Than listening to an album for the first time, from a download.



I do realize not everybody needs that bond with a physical CD or LP when it comes to music. But I think metal is a genre where this is still a very important and appreciated factor of enjoying music.

Every downloaded album I enjoy, I eventually buy. The added lyrics makes me understand the music better.

That's great! But it wasn't really my point.

I consider metal releases a combination of music, poetry and imagery, only a download won't suffice when the music's great.



You probably meant the romanticism of excitement of exploring a new musical package. I understand but that is only the beginning moment. It wears off..



I am though, considering doing again am almost first-day buy on the upcoming MA record since I started that on Domination.

Yes, I meant that.

But it doesn't wear off for me. I can still hold Formulas in my hands, or Gateways, and really feel that charm that it brought when I bought it. That feeling never disappears for me. Not with all albums though.

I guess having that feeling wearing off for me is due to the fact that it disappears inbetween my wall of 2000+ cd's

Haha, my amount probably comes close.

I also have that feeling when having Passion & Warfare by Steve Vai, or Neurosis - Times of Grace in my hands. They still really have that magic in them.

Perhaps it's an age thing.



But basically these albums that still bring me those feelings, where I just get into that mindset of when I bought them, are really pieces of history and a part of my life and who I am. I think that is also one of the reasons why music is so important to me.

I have it with some cd's, mostly with LP's: Somewhere in time, Rust in Peace, Passion and warfare, Lights camera revolution...

I'll be ordering all the MA albums I don't have once I get my first paycheck next week, I'll hopefully be able to snag a 2LP of FFF before it goes out of stock.

I just got the Formulas LP last month, its good stuff. I own all of the albums on CD but I plan on buying another copy of Altars for the Live Madness DVD and another copy of Blessed which will actually play on all CD players (I have the dual-disc).

No coloured versions anymore, even the black vinyl version seems to be almost sold out.



Maybe Earache will release some Morbid Angel stuff also to cash in on disappointed people by the release of the new album?

Humwawa, I've have exactly the same feeling as you ! The magic has disappeared ! I specialy remember when "covenant" came out, because it was at the same period in the year as Illud and it was the first time I was waiting for the release of a new MA album, and here in Switzerland we had no idea of the exact day of release and I went to the store practically every day during 2 weeks, with my bike, and one day it was there !!! I was so excited, dicsovering the final cover (I had seen alternative versions in magazines), the woodcut on the back, the song titles ! haha

Today I try to avoid listening to samples on youtube, but sometimes I cannot resist !!!
