First week sales

This will be interesting to say the least. With all the negative reviews and feedback coupled with already poor album sales in this day and age. At the same time, you have to think that a lot of people will just blind buy this simply because its MA. My guess is somewhere between 5-10k. Probably going to be waaay off though.

I was wondering the same actually. 5k would be realistic as that's what bands like Cannibal Corpse have done recently.

At the ask Earache blog Digby Pearson wrote that he'd heard that 2000 of the wooden boxes had been made and that they had all sold out. I'm not sure what to make of this as that sound like a hell of a lot, especially at over £100 per "copy". If that was the case I wouldn't be surprised if the other editions of the album had also sold really well.

I predict this album will sell a couple of 100's max. As I consider this an EP; I will buy it when the price drops which I expect to be very soon.

wow thats pretty bad

i dont know that that's actually too bad, considering how much more prevalent downloading is today than it was in even 2003

"stroke me, for i wish to orgasm" yes. I would assume it has been downloaded at least 10k times. This could also mean that the band will be touring Europe more often.

Well they should play a club tour in Finnyland then!!! Nile played 4-5 show club tour here few years back. Neat-o'.

Yes, moreover Illud sold thousand copies on preorder.

However Heretic sold 3.800 units...

Re: First week sales

Posted: 16 Jun 2011, 01:28
by agony bagony
i know that i'm saying given that downloading is even more prevalent in 2011, and given that this album has gone through some anus-ripping feedback, selling fewer units last week than heretic did in its first week eight years ago is maybe not that bad. ESPECIALLY considering that that sales figure is in the US & canada, where MA hasn't done a proper tour in fucking forever

Re: First week sales

Posted: 16 Jun 2011, 02:18
by Mesarthim
i'm not really shocked at all. a lot of those were probably pre-orders.

Re: First week sales

by Conservative_Heretic
I would like to see overall numbers as well, not just US/Canadian ones.

I also think the negative push-back/feedback/reviews has fed directly into this. I know my F.Y.E. here had originally only ordered two copies to have in store on release day, I got one of them, they then ordered 5 more copies - those same ones are STILL sitting in the store shelves. Maybe after the album has been out a full month and they have several more shows they will pick up more sales but at the same time I keep reading about shows that are not selling tickets very well at all since the album was released, but don't know how much of that is hype and how much is bullshit.

I also read between the lines and have come to accept that Morbid Angel's fan base is much smaller than I had ever thought it was. Granted I am basing that mainly from their Facebook page likes. Example: Morbid Angel: 81,000 Belphegor: 140,000 Deicide: 230,000 Cannibal Corpse: 500,000 Slayer: 1,500,000 Pantera: 3,887,000 Slipknot: 8,100,000 maybe this is also what you get when you wait 8 years before releasing a new album. As another way of comparison Hate Eternal has 20,000 likes and sold 1400 copies in the US their first week of sales.

Based on those above numbers 1 out of every 5 MA fans (22.5%) bought the album this past week. That seems pretty impressive in itself

The above was all done very non-scientifically using only my redneck logic and number manipulation

If they are in fact daring and consider themselves artists, why are they still playing the same old set list + the most basic songs off the new album? You'd think they would have figured out how to perform those cutting edge tracks live long before making any tour commitments.

I agree with this. I was expecting once the official release date rolled by they would have started playing most of the songs from IDI.

is it really surprising that these numbers are seemingly low? cannibal corpse rarely take breaks, tour constantly and have a new album out every few years.

MA hasn't really done much at all since heretic, and its not like they are connected with the fans. (last i checked the website sucked etc)

From Blabbermouth: "GWAR's new album, "Bloody Pit Of Horror", sold around 2,800 copies in the United States in its first week of release."

Sheesh. With Morbid Angel being rivalled by GWAR for album sales now, I foresee there being some changes before the next album emerges...
