well, if you haven't already, check out the legends: Emperor, Mayhem, Burzum, Dark Funeral, Darkthrone, Etc.



it really depends what style you're more interested in. do you like stuff with a lot of ambience and/or keyboards or just straight up grim and awesome riffs or both, etc. there's also the cross over stuff like blackened death or black thrash, etc. vocal styles vary as well.

some Depressive Black Metal. usually vocals are more of the screeching / screaming in agony variety. sometimes clean vocals are thrown in as well and this music itself is at a slower pace, usually not having any blast beats, etc. I hated this subgenre at first but there are actually some really good bands out there.

death metal is so stale these days, but black metal continues to evolve.



sure, there are the classics but I actually rather enjoy much of what has been released post 2000 and this next decade has already proven to only continue said.



I don't care about the image or any of that non sense. lyrical content doesn't even really matter all that much. black metal is a state of being. it's not just an attitude, but a belief and an emotion. it is every thing most metal is not. being fruital or grim for the sake of being said is fucking lame. but many bands take it to another level.



Morbid Angel used to be this way. i'm not so sure if they still do.



many black metal artist do however and that is why it continues to be one of my favorite genres. it evokes emotion in ones self, without relying on cliche bullshit that so many mainstream bands tend to do.



yes, I still listen to other genres and even find enjoyment from some bands. but so much of it is just fake bullshit. black metal, the good stuff anyways, is true. true to the heart. I may be drunk but the last few years I have honestly listened to more black metal than anything. for me it is the future of metal. it is the most innovative genre of metal and only continues to prove itself. death, thrash, and even prog metal only go so far before they all start to sound the same, which is a shame but perhaps that will change some day when people stop taking shit at face value. brutality and breakdowns only take you so far before people move on. black metal leaves a mark. I need more wine.

i was always into the french bands, deathspell omega, blut aus nord and all the bands in the les legions noires (mutiilation, vlad tepes, moevot, brenoritvrezorkre, belketre etc)

Uncreation's Dawn - Death's tyranny is a classic album of raw fury from recent years, that is sufficiently grim for my liking whilst still remaining listenable. Perhaps it's quite a harsh introduction to the genre, but there is an intensity in the bands performance which really encapsulates the misanthropic spirit of underground black metal in my opinion

do you even realise how little sense that makes?

Yeah but using Sacramentum to introduce someone to black metal is kind of like using Job For A Cowboy to introduce someone to hardcore.

i think the idea is that even though it's not strictly black metal, dissection is a common suggestion in threads like these, so if you're going to list them you might as well throw in sacramentum too. i agree they're more on the DM side of things when it comes right down to it, but the atmosphere is evocative of black metal enough to merit a place in the discussion.
