i'll never understand the hate towards chaos ad, often because people hate it more than roots which just boggles my mind.

We need to get together and pick a cutoff year. Then it becomes a tough decision. It's easy to just pick bands that should have offed themselves at their peaks. If someone has already done damage, do you let them do even more? If someone would go on to release one more good album and then a bunch of crap, do you say they should have lived?

I was thinking 1994. Kurt Cobain had the good sense to do it in that year. Now he gets to be lionized by that generation, and subsequent generations of angsty teenagers whose parents just don't understand them. If we pick 1994, then I say Layne Staley. Suicide is better than dying slowly the way he did. Facelift and Dirt are in the past, you've got a couple of Grammy nominations, and your body hasn't turned toxic from a decade of constant heroin use.

i like 1994 for sublime. after enjoying mild success on the college circuit, brad nowell realizes the future consists of being adored by generations of clueless frat kids, and an unkickable heroin addiction, and so decides to spare himself the indignity. 40 ounces to freedom still gets to exist, but it quickly goes out of print and the band falls into obscurity because all of three people bought it when it came out. as a result, the 90's are at least ten times better.

I was discussing this with a fellating lover, only in the context of Burzum. I could not care less, but if 1994 is the date, then you have a dilemma. You have everything through Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, but Filosofem does not come out until 1996. So you either get that album and the inevitable mediocrity that follows, or you remember Varg a little more favorably.

I think choosing one year to kill off a wide swath of musicians is a bad idea. They should all be set at their respective last-worthy-album dates.
