Yngwie nowadays lost the power and ability of playing of when he was young, he got old and I think the incidents he had (he had different car incidents that also involved hands) ruined a bit his playing. He could be repetitive ok....but I am sure about one thing: in mixing classical music and heavy metal he was the master and the first to do it in that way. Paul Gilbert himself was a Malmsteen fan when he started. This means something......

Anyway I 'm not trying to be his advocate, but fuck, he wasn't/isn't a fool and I don't think he's overrated.

van halen had totally different style and im a actually a bigger fan of his stuff than yngwies ..but you cant compare this...

there are lots of good guitarplayers out there ..but some just have this macigal lil thing no one can exactly explain..

van halen got it, yngwie, vai in some way, frank zappa, hendrix, trey and some more....

Blackmore is of course NOT able to play like Yngwie. But is also a normal concept that in the 70's THAT was the way of playing, and in the 80's speed and virtuosism reach its peak.



I don't know why Malmsteen is so criticized (not here, in general); but I think is just for the fact he is arrogant (but is a part of his public charachter....) Anyway he has also a lot of die hard fans.

1) I have some bootlegs of Deep Purple from about 1970 and Rainbow in 1976--Blackmore was easily as fast but more tasteful--his entire solo was not a blur of 32nd notes, but he was certainly capable of it. (I mean an actual solo where it's just him--not a solo while the band plays.)



2) He's an arrogant asshole who's also wildly unoriginal. He has good chops, I give him that (but not on a classical guitar--he's incredibly sloppy), but he's either ripping off Blackmore, Vivaldi, or Paganini most of the time.

Blackmore and Malmsteen have also in common a very difficult personality

True dat! Actually, when I met Blackmore, he was very nice. I read once that he hated journalists and purposely came off as arrogant or something just to mess with them. He and Yngwie are also perfectionists, which may add to their "difficulty."



Ritchie also had quite a wicked sense of humor and loved to play pranks. He's Lemmy telling about one of them!

Malmsteen is techincally better than Blackmore but his songwriting is nothing compared to what Blackmore did on RISING, LONG LIVE ROCK n' ROLL, DOWN TO EARTH and DIFFICULT TO CURE. Malmsteen borrowed alot of stuff from those albums, so saying that Malmsteen was "first" with incoporating classical music into hardrock is just naive and silly. But hey, don't take it wrong. I love Yngwie Malmsteen, he is one of my favourite guitarists ever, but he owes ALOT, fucking ALOT of respect to Blackmore. Back in the days, in like 85 he dressed exactly the same, did the same moves on stage, copied the whole guitar-execution procedure from blackmore. He picked up his scalloped neck from Blackmore, he used his Mood Taurus exactly the way Blackmore did. Malmsteens 4 first albums is still awesome, but after that, everything slopped down, he started doing exactly same thing over and over again.

I agree in all you write. Malmsteen is not a good songwriter, his idol is Blackmore and is clear. But anyway I think that Yngwie have his own personality. I don't consider him a copy of Blackmore.

Yikes! He's not even playing it right! Ritchie uses his fingers, not his pick, to pluck the opening progression in 4ths...it sounds much different and better defined with the fingers.



And don't get me wrong: I admire Wigwam's speed and incorporation of classical music--I just wish he were a bit more original and also didn't repeat his licks so often.

Yngwies debut album is not lacking in sonwriting, I think it's solid, the 4 first albums and Fire and Ice were intresting, but the rest is shit.
