Krallice, Wolves in the Throne Room, basically anything that comes out of America after the mid gloryhole era and sounds like it could have come out of Norway just a few years prior to the church burnings and murder.

Not saying that, just saying prefer the original to a cheap copy.

with the exception of Krallice, most hipster black metal is far superior to anything coming out of Scandinavia in the 90's

Ha! How can you denounce albums such as Opus Nocturne, The Somberlain, Transilvanian Hunger, Filosofem (to which the entire genre of DSBM owes its debt), De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, Vikingligr Veldi, and Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism as being inferior to their American imitators that just wanna be as cool as lil Varkie because he burned some churches?

Allah forbid we would judge a band on their musical merit.

What? How is listening to a band and saying that it's not good because it sounds exactly like something else not judging it on its musical merit?

because A) they sound nothing alike and B) you're allowing blind adherence to the "old school" to get in the way of actually judging anything on its merits

hipster black metal happens when a bunch of dudes who don't really have much of a clue about black metal come in and decide it's the new in-thing and proceed to record albums that sound like black metal but capture none of its spirit. because they don't care about shit like that, genre is akin to a fashion statement for the hipster. the point of the music for them is primarily that it should say something about the artist (or bolster their social standing), not to create art that says something useful or interesting or anything like that.

if you think bands like krallice and liturgy and wittr are comparable to (nevermind better than) the classics by burzum and enslaved and etc., you're off your fucking rocker. if you enjoy that stuff, fine, i'm not gonna begrudge anyone for it, but to say it's superior to those albums is plainly wrong.

alright, you did specifically exempt krallice from that, but my point still stands :waa:

It seemed to me that your value judgement was historical.

if that's the case then you should all loathe and dislike Mayhem...despite what they may have evolved into, they basically started in the same manner as an art project (if you watch some of the more recent documentaries like once upon a time in norway you'll see what I mean, they are not that different) not saying any of these new bands are on the path to legendary status or what the fuck ever. they write quality music no matter what spirit they are trying or not trying to capture. I enjoy some of these "hipster bm" bands, although I do think liturgy is garbage. Krallice and Wolves in the throne room are awesome.

No. They started out covering Venom/Celtic Frost and evolved into a more Bathory-esque style. I've seen Total Fucking Mayhem and Until the Light takes us and what you're saying is completely wrong.

Every Wolves in the Throne Room song I've ever heard sounds like a second rate version of Darkthrone and Dissection fucked together in one miserable ball of post-controversy cash in. Those fucking idiots in that band live in the woods like a bunch of idiots and take the whole pagan thing way to seriously. They are fashion victims to the highest degree.

That too. That band really reminds me of Dissection as well.

The band Weakling from California. It took me a minute to think who they were, but when I saw their album Dead as Dreams on M-A and I remembered I had heard them before when, guess what, a hipster showed them to me.

When I see "hipster bm", I think DsO, Twilight, Ruins of Beverast and Castevet

you're almost right. this hard-on bearer reminds me of xdevilbunny and i'm in no mood to argue with this kind of stuck up elitist bullshit. I don't care that much about this band to get all emotional over it.

xdevilbunny used to post here? I've known him from Last.FM and the old school death metal forum and never found him elitist... care to elaborate?

With regards to post / hipster black metal I have to say that I prefer most of the bands that get labelled hipster to the "trve" black metal. Some of these bands are doing genuinely interesting stuff, stuff thats much more interesting than Transylvanian Hunger in my opinion, and that's in no way a bad thing. You don't have to like them but to slag them of because they deviate from the trve template is pretty close minded.

I find the term hipster tends to have more to do with the fans anyway rather than the band members.

Re: new Krallice album

The criticism from me isn't based on the fact that they don't sound like Transilvanian Hunger (not even my favorite Darkthrone release, I much prefer their last couple of albums) but the fact that so many of them try to play black metal but don't capture the same feeling that the early Norwegian bands did. It's pathetic to see so many similar bands pop up in such a short amount of time, and this post is basically turning into an echo of what Derek said earlier.
