no kidding he used to be better. i remember reading an interview with him in 1998 in which he said he didn't practice because he didn't see the point to it, drumming was just a physical thing anyway, and not as relevant to the music as the guitars.

but in the 80s and early gloryhole era when you are playing 100+ shows a year i guess you don't have to "practice" as much because you're playing all the time anyway. whereas now whatever skills he once had have just deteriorated like an addict's cerebellum. those "warm ups" they do before a gig now are a joke

Just like any other instrument.

One nice example is the way he drums Blackened nowadays.. It is a fucking disgrace. They even removed the part where the beat reverses. And go straight from a shorter solo section into the last verse and chorus.

My point was, he could never play that from start to finish perfectly. On the last tour they played it but without the double bass during the chorus. Weak.

Liquid Metal has been hi-jacked so I have heard way more live Metallica than I have in a long time and I must agree with all the above, they just ain't the same at all. I know I am biased and miss Cliff ( R.I.P ) but it seems they have just lost their mojo but they have great talent and are genuine musicians so the shell is still there, but I think the heart left a loooooong time ago.

i think there is some heart on death magnetic. hetfield sounds like he still gives a shit (even if his voice is poop in the live setting). there are plenty of tasty riffs on there, just poor production. and truly mediocre drumming

I agree. I heard Suicide and redemption and it actually made me think of Cliff and a possible return to the MOP sound so I bought the album. Not bad, not their best, but I think it was a great improvement over more recent releases. Though I will admit I enjoy Frantic from St. Anger

Death Magnetic has a lot of heart I think.



The clear weak link in the band (to my ears) Is Kirk. The drumming will always be pretty mediocre, but it's the easiest thing to get over when it comes to metallica.

i think a few different things



1. kirk is way more talented and appropriate for metallica on guitar than lars is on drums. my ears are not as tuned to guitar stuffs but i don't hear kirk cutting shit out of old songs for simplicity's sake the way i have noted lars doing this for about the last fifteen years. just basic things like four bars worth of fills. or, more sinfully, double bass in pretty much any song. if there's a fast double bass roll he just doesn't even play it anymore (battery, damage, blackened, dyer's eve pretty much any of the new stuff, the quadruplet gallop in the four horsemen). the only exceptions i can find are fight fire with fire – where cutting the DB break after the solo would be stupid obvious - and the breakdown in one, which would be stupid and criminal



2. st. anger is a glorious train wreck of an album filled with a bunch of decent riffs, a whole lot of shitty ones, the cheesiest, most cornball lyrics in the world, and what-were-they-thinking-no-seriously production. the shorter songs are all better and frantic is one of the shorter-ish songs, and to me one of the listenable ones



3. suicide and redemption is serious win & very underrated.

I think James has always been underrated for his rhythm guitar playing. It's all very tight and precise.
