I spent an arvo with Thor, Pete and Dave last year and Thor seems to be a small part of the band; I met Eric a few times and he seems to be more involved. But that's just a quick opinion. Not sure what his involvement is in the songwriting.

Re: I
when i met them in 2008 it lookes like thor was really just a good fellating lover of the band helping out on the left side of the stage
after the gig he stood there and nobody was talking with him.. but now it could be different.. trey doesnt need help when it comes
down to recording ..but if they stay with thor he will prbly contribute some soloing to the new record ..i hope not because it isnt necessary
it just worked fine on formulas and heretic !

Re: I
I'm not really a fan of David Vincent's vocals on Domination or on any of the live recordings I've heard which were made since then. I probably would have preferred Steve Tucker to still be in the band for the new record. However, I get the impression the David may balance out Trey more than Steve did, so from that point of view I'm glad he's back. Hopefully it will mean we get more of a well-rounded release rather than just an album of experimentation. I do like Trey's experimentations and far-out moments but I think he's in danger of taking it one step too far this time. I think David should keep him a bit more grounded.

Re: I
David & Trey showed great songwriting skills together in the past, so I'm confident they'll compliment eachother in this again.
Great that the album is now actually nearing completion! Because Thor was already flown in, my guess is he also recorded some leads.

I hope so, rather then his leads recorded (that should've been Trey's.)

Do they do that before the album is finalized? Why would that be?

I would also guess that he is playing a lead or two on the album.

Re: I
I honestly expect a pretty crappy album. How often are bands' 7th album real good?
Example of 7ths":
Black Sabbath: Technical Ecstasy
Metallica: ReLoad
Ozzy Osbourne: Ozzmosis
Iron Maiden: Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
Slayer: Undisputed Attitude
Megadeth: Cryptic Writings
Motley Crue: Generation Swine
There are very few artists that actually make better music as they expand their catalog. In fact, I think that they only band that has every continually made better albums than the one prior was The Beatles. Pink Floyd perhaps too, since Dark Side of the Moon was number 8 for them.
...but bottom line: this album is most likely going to really suck.

Re: I
I counted A-H. Omitting Abominations since it was never really intended for commercial release, and omitting Entangled since it's not a studio album. But even so it would be worse looking at 9s, lol.
Even with great bands like Slayer, I've never been able to warm up to any albums after Divine Intervetion. Some albums have some OK songs, but as a whole it always feels like they're trying too hard, and the sounds and riffs are real thin and uninspiring. Catatonic is the only good song on Christ Illusion for example, imo. God Hates us All was too bloated and tiring to be any good, and World Painted Blood is just sad. Literally. Tom's voice sounds too battered, and all I can picture when I listen to it is how old they all look, and it just seems silly.
Metal is not a musical genre that it's artists age well, meaning, that at a certain age: hang it up. Ozzy is perhaps the only exception. Even regular rock music. It's depressing to see how ridiculous these 80s hair band guys look now with eyeliner, trying to look like they did when they were in their 20s.
And honestly, to see David Vincent in a vinyl bodysuit with dyed black hair and goatee is embarrassing. He never dressed like that in the early days, and I'm not sure what he's trying to do there, but I hope it stops....
Nonetheless, their best years are gone. The "I" album will NOT be Covenant part deux. It will be their 'Death Magnetic'.

What will constitute a "good" or "great" album for each of you? I'm hoping for lots of blast beat, furious double-bass, busy chromatic riffs that aren't regurgitated, unexpected time/key changes, a few slow grindy sections, and heavy use of 7-strings, with an overall dark and menacing vibe. (I think we can take wicked/insane solos for granted!)

No, obviously. But this is merely a prediction based on the near infinite previous examples of every single other band that has produced more than half a dozen albums coupled with the fact that 'Nevermore' sounds "OK" at best (imo), and given the fact that it was chosen to be the 'single' for the "I" album does not bode well for the rest of it..... Of course, I really do hope that I'm wrong, but looking at things logically I really don't expect anything else.

Better production quality than was found on Heretic (Think: The cleanliness of Domination)
Better guitar tone for Trey than found on Heretic (Best guitar tone: "Domination", imo)
No goofy whammy bar tracks that fill most of the space on Heretic for example
Catchy opening riffs (Think: "Where the Slime Live"; "God of Emptiness"; "Sworn to the Black"; "At One with Nothing", etc,..
Numerous tempo changes (Think: the change for the chanting part in 'Chapel of Ghouls'-- "Demons. Attack with hate")
Open breaks for solos: (Think: Bass fill/solo in "Suffocation. mk. 2:07"; Double-bass Drum fill/solo in "Lion's Den. mk. 1:23"; etc,..
Some things that on first listen are wholly unexpected: (Think: the first time you heard: "Bow to me faithfully" in "God of Emptiness"--instant classics)
I know that Morbid Angel is by far the best death metal band, and that individually Pete, Trey, and David are amazing, let alone together... I just have very little faith that "I", five years down the road will be anyone's favorite album. Honestly, who thinks that 'Black Rain' is Ozzy's best album; that 'reload' was Metallica at their peak; that 'Never say Die' is an amazing Sabbath album? To draw a parallel outside of music, who thinks that Rocky VI is better than the original, you know?
I would love to be blown away, and to have everything that I'm saying here be false, and trust me... even amidst my skepticism of "I", I can't wait to hear the new Morbid Angel album. In a month or so all this speculation will be put to bed, and the truth of it--whatever it happens to be--will be strikingly obvious to all of us, for good or bad.

Re: I
It's fucking retarted to think that how somebody dresses, looks or how they dyed their hair, is going to effect an album recording. Some of the biggest assholes made some of the greatest music.
Sworn: when you say "better" production, you think "the cleanliness of Domination"? I don't think it will sound like D simply because the band themselves weren't happy with the result, and tbh that production could've been better. (But that's all a matter of taste).
And when you say "metal isn't a musical genre" - What? Of course it's a musical genre. Or do you define a "musical genre" as something else? Any musician in any genre has their ups and downs, and they can all hit a "musical rock bottom" early and later in their career.
Also, sure people/musicians age and so does their music. But what you said about Ozzy; damn, even he should quit.

Re: I
Void,
no no no, when I was mentioning about how silly David looks now I was not inferring that his appearance would affect the new album, the only point that I was making was that it's embarrassing to see it, since he's much older now, and the "new look" is all the more embarrassing since it was never even his younger look and seems to be an early midlife crisis thing.
I never said that "metal is not a musical genre", rather that was only half of the statement. The full statement (as can be seen above) was: "Metal is not a musical genre that it's artists age well, meaning, that at a certain age: hang it up." Look at the sentence again, nowhere do I say that it is not a genre, but that it is not a genre in which its artists age well. Again, directly related to David's little identity crisis (perhaps a little leftover stuff from his Genitorturer days). Sorry for any confusion there.
Yeah I know that "I" will likely not sound like Domination. Which, in my opinion, is the best quality of recording, but a good number of people would likely disagree with my opinion on that--including Trey, lol. But, when I listen to an album, I like to be able to differentiate each musical component, and oftentimes--especially in metal--all you hear is a wall of noise. As an aside, I think that 'South of Heaven' and 'Seasons in the Abyss' were the best quality of studio recording of all of Slayer's albums, and although I really like 'Divine Intervention' musically, I think it's too muddy, and would love it to be re-mixed.
The great thing about the sound of 'Domination' was a few things. First, Trey still had his Eventide harmonizer, and his guitar tone was absolutely amazing. Second, the songs all had a great "mood" musically--powerful, vibrant, acidic, precise, harmonious, and catchy. Lyrically 'Domination' has some issues, but as for the music, it was a masterpiece. Third, it was the first album that both Trey and Erik worked on together, and the two of them created something profound when coupled together like that. Fourth, Morbid Angel had a monster budget on 'Domination' (I think I once heard a value around $500,000) and the quality of recording equipment, skill of the engineers, and time available to be in the studio all combined to make "D" the example of what a great death metal band can accomplish when given better tools to work with. Some people thought "D" was a sell-out record, that Morbid Angel in some way compromised the death metal world and their own integrity by going to a big label... I disagree with that 100%. I hate the whole mentality that music is garbage unless its underground, and I think a good deal of the criticism of "D" was from that mindset.
...enough on "D", it's probably best to just agree to disagree on that.
yeah most artists will have a low point, and I hate to say that Morbid Angel's might be now, but Heretic was pretty bad, and like I said 'Nevermore' doesn't offer much hope, imo, ergo my pessimism for "I". By the way, I think that Ozzy should have stopped making new music around 'No More Tears', that was an OK album, and was an improvement from 'No Rest for the Wicked' and would have been a good stopping point for him. For the albums that he's put out since "NMT", each album has had 1 decent song, no more. He can still perform though, and quite well I might add, but the well of creativity has dried up for Ozzy. I think that Ozzy is a kind of exception to the rule only because of how important he has been to the metal world, so his continuing to put out albums is, in way excusable. No matter how fat and bloated and awful Elvis got towards the end he was still fuckin Elvis. Ozzy falls into that rare category of being more than just a musical artist as did Elvis, and isn't quite held to the same standards since he's above those standards.... so in short, it's OK for Ozzy to make more albums even if they're kinda shitty, because after-all, he's fuckin Ozzy. And yes, at the same time I agree that he "shouldn't" be making more albums... confusing I know... sorry.

And yes, at the same time I agree that he "shouldn't" be making more albums... confusing I know... sorry.

Re: I
Ok, I see where you're coming from. No hard feelings.
Listen to Covenant again, and you'll notice how clean that record actually is. Every instrument is very audible, even the bassguitar. Eventhough the bassguitar could be a bit less boomy in the low end and a little boost in the mid-high's. I love how Pete's kickdrum sounds on Covenant, very acoustic and full in tone. Modern metal productions all have that notch around 1k - 1.5k in the kickdrum EQ and just sound like a "click". Somehow it works because it gets through the frequency range of the guitars, but it's not how a kickdrum sounds and feels. Hence I love how Flemming managed to get that low-end tone out in the mix of Covenant. Where the toms and snare sound of Formulas are truly magnificent.
I also think Heretic is a great album, not bad at all, only for the drums - way too digital for my taste. But Trey's guitar tone is awesome imo, too bad the entire production lacks the bassguitar's low-end to give it some balls.
Have you heard Deathspell Omega's last album "Paracletus"? The bassguitar sound is truly fucking amazing. It growls and sounds just perfect! I wonder how Heretic would've sound which such a bass sound.

Are you talking about his lead tone? Because he only used the harmoniser on very few leads. He only used it for the reverse shift etc. not really for the pitch-shifting. To me the defining thing about Morbid Angel has always been the distinct grouwl of a Marshall in a way only MA uses. His Rhythm sound has to this day been constructed the same way. He just ditched his Rane EQ and replaced it with a GE-7.
The only thing which was profoundly different was the miking/capturing of the sound.
Personally I think Covenant is the most natural i.e organic sounding recording. With drums which sound like a actual drumkit.
To me the D guitar sound is a little to trebly and the grit in the distortion a little too spiky. I love the warm crunchy sound on C.
Those two hits on the low B string in the opening of world of shit.. Instant boner..
Although Domination has some very good tracks on there the overall sound is a little to clinical/industrial for me. The way i hear it the overall balance of the instruments in the mix is better on Covenant.
(I can remember vividly being kinda dissapointed wit Domination when it came out...)
