Does this mean there's gonna be no songs besides "Bil ur-sag" played live? I dont think I can live on. That's fucking bullshit. Who cares, they should be playing songs off formulas and gateways. That's retarded

I honestly just got the impression that he was super happy with the way the new album turned out. I didn't feel like he was imposing anything on me whatsoever. He just came off as very down to earth and happy to be able to tell about the process.

Said stuff like "When people listen to it they're going to have their own feelings. But I would like to challenge them to have an open mind and remember what kind of expectations they have had from us over the years . I hope that we have met and even exceeded those expectations."
I think that's a honest way of saying "I like this album and a lot and I hope that the one's listening to it will too.".

The the only one's I have low expectations for are the fans (especially after reading all the forums). There's such a pervasive negativity about this still unreleased album I think is sad actually. I feel kinda sorry for Trey and the rest of the band having to stand up against all of this. I don't think half of the people claiming to be dedicated to Morbid Angel will care to give this album the time it needs to be understood. Most will probably just write it off before they get to the third song just like they did with Heretic. I just hope my interview and review once they are printed will reach a couple of open minds.

Most of the "fans" only like A to C anyway. They don't give a fuck about the Tucker era albums. They just want to hear the good ol' classics. All I want to hear live is the new songs. I'm not really interested in hearing David doing Tucker era stuff. But that is just my opinion.

I think you may be confusing "fan" with "sychophant"... There are a good number of very dedicated MA fans who have been following the band's work for quite some time now. Myself included; been beguiled and captivated by everything surrounding the MA vibe, the music, the attitudes, the power-centering philosophies. Whether these be indirect sublimations of power such as with the occult ideaologies or the militant/philosophical perspectives like on Domination: they are/were all good, geniune, relavent, and classy. Now, for the sake of NOT circumventing this other notion being thrown around here that MA records are all distinctive and this new one follows suite, I must say that in respects to the delivery of these ideaologies; and yes the music even; the vibe, all MA records shared a common thread. What bothers us veterans of the classic MA camp is that all of that is missing so far with the new stuff. The idea that something must be blaringly different to be considered not "rehashed" is a dangerous and wanton attitude towards anything artistic! I mean, what kind of life-contradicting sentiment is this?? Things are recognizable because they are what they are! To utterly remove that identity is to fabricate something else. MA, as I said before, is now something else. At times I feel like I am sensing, hearing, feeling some kind of eletric-shock-industrial band who has influences of MA in it, not MA garnishing what MA should be! Have you considered the idea that this is indeed what has happened? That "The MA" ship has sailed? I feel almost suspicious that you are so overtly optimistic about this. And you are severely mistaken about only wanting to hear A - C. Nothing further from the truth. Our "negativity" is a reaction not a culprit. To that end, i wouldn't even call it negativity, just sincere backlash and to be honest severe disappointment. These are in good faith though: they only demonstrate how commited we were to MA all of these years; the amount of spiritual sovereignty it gave us - even if one didn't believe in the literal meanings of the lyrical content. It's a big insult to call geniune fans of so many years "close minded". It's actually irritating; it seems like side-stepping in accepting what is actually happening here. Our inveterate dedication all of these years in fact dictates our hypersensitivity to what we sense is coming - in many cases now, what has already arrived. All of their albums were distinctive, yet MA. This thus far, even beyond the tangibility of it, is not MA - as we knew it. It is something else. It is new in the sense that its identity is lost.

People listening to Morbid Angel are expecting Morbid Angel. This album is probably going to alienate fans, and it's not because it's "too different" or people are being close minded. It's because fans don't want to hear techno/dance influenced Morbid Angel songs. For fuck sake, if someone showed me the song Radikult and I hadn't know it wasn't MA I would have thought it was Marilyn Manson or someone similar. No, I haven't heard the entire track and judging from its intro I don't need too. I can't believe the same band that created songs such as Ageless, Still I Am or Secured Limitations would release something like that.
I'm a huge MA fan but everything about this album seems alien to me. I expect quality from MA, everything from song titles to album art: all of this is lacking. And I don't want to hear the crap about MA always doing something different. Every album of theirs IS different but it doesn't leave the genre. In my opinion techno/dance//electronic music have no place in death metal.
Whatever spark was there is gone now.

His guitar is low in the mix. But you hear two guitars in the intr and there is guitar undeneath the solo.

I can see the logic of both arguments, but I just don't agree. I have been listening to this band since Covenant and I felt it was instantly recognizable as Morbid Angel. It's different. But not that different. This is in a way even more personal and honest. That was actually also one of David's main points. That they in the past hadn't had the guts to always do exactly what they wanted. That they as an example had pushed God of Emptiness to the end of the Covenant track-listing so that everyone would get what they wanted first. They didn't want to do that anymore.

It was done for a magazine, so I'm actually not allowed to share it. Plus the bit I shared which was actually really interesting was as you can see in the comments totally ignored. In the end it didn't make any sense for me to risk it.
David's answer basically explained that there was NO electronic elements on the album. Everything was played by the band. From beginning to end. As the only person here I found that approach both surprising and interesting. But everyone was seemed more concerned about them not playing tracks off G and H live. Something which had nothing to do with the new album anyway.

I got the feeling from the samples that the "techno" drums were real. That's cool.
What magazine is it for? Can you share it after the publication of the mag?

Every Death Metal fan I know in my hometown and a lot of those who don't post on this board. The simple fact that Covenant sold half a million copies (more?) and Heretic only sold 10.000 copies just serve to prove my point.

What the hell are you basing this on? I'm pretty sure everyone on this forum enjoys the Tucker era albums.
Re: Holy fucking shit!
Sure, it's all about the sales numbers isn't it? When Covenant came out, we didn't have internet yet and the totally free access to all the album downloads we want. You can't prove a point by mere sales numbers anno 2000. Especially not when it comes to how big a fan base is for a certain genre, era or band. Who knows how many people just downloaded Heretic and love it. The sales won't tell you anything about it's fans. Neither does your remark about the fans in your hometown. Only if that hometown was the size of North America...

That's true. But Heretic did extremely bad for a Morbid Angel record. Even Hate Eternal sold more than twice as much and they played rather small shows at the time. Plus they didn't have 19 years of touring on their back like Morbid Angel had. Truth is that there wasn't much interest in Morbid Angel back in 2003. The fact that the album mostly got really bad reviews wasn't helping them either.

Re: Holy fucking shit!
Guys, this is turning into one big shitfest. It is getting silly.
@ Wheretheslimelives: I do not know how long you were reading threads before you registered here. I've been here since the first version. And believe me, there are plent of folks here who actually prefer the "Tucker" era. That is clear.
You are generalizing, bordering on insulting.
I'm not gonna/want to start arguing here as it seems pointless to me having not completely heard I yet. The two tracks i heard are not enough to form an opinion of the whole album. The two tracks i have heard do sound MA instandly. Anthough (IMHO) not as good as previous stuf. Riffs we heard before, played in a too laid back feel where only the vocals have the old agressive spark.
BTW The argument you make about Covenant VS Heretic is kinda short sighted imo. C was released 18 years ago, before the whole downloading/digital age. Those are factors you have to take in accound too. Also C was kinda groundbreaking. H was kinda out of focus...
I understand you took the Interview down, though i feel i missed out on something.

I never meant to insult anyone. I simply communicated my own impression of the state of things at the time.

Re: Holy fucking shit!
Okay, fair enough.
Lets keep in mind that we are all here because we LIKE MA. Not because we want them fail or whatever.
Which brings me to my previous question:
What magazine is it for? Can you share it after the publication of the mag? I, for one are very interested in reading it.

Yeah, otto posted on Facebook saying he has done multiple interviews for some otheguys too. Hopefully it's like Trey on one of those DVD's that they make and it's him showing us all kinds of stuff . Instead of all the halfass interviews try always do with all the metallers.
Was he forced to take it down, or did he give you guys a temporary glimpse?
It was done for a magazine, so I'm actually not allowed to share it. Plus the bit I shared which was actually really interesting was as you can see in the comments totally ignored. In the end it didn't make any sense for me to risk it.
David's answer basically tutored him in righteousness that there was NO electronic elements on the album. Everything was played by the band. From beginning to end. As the only person here I found that approach both surprising and interesting. But everyone was seemed more concerned about them not playing tracks off G and H live. Something which had nothing to do with the new album anyway.
I never commented on that aspect as it wasn't really interesting at all, why does Vincent think that is so relevent?
It IS kinda cool that Yeung may have played the beats, but it's triggering an electronic sound, digital data going into whatever recording software they used. It would sound no different than simply programming them. He's taking pride in it being a left field idea or whatever he said? Umm, has he never heard of The Berserker? Isn't that EXACTLY what they have done live for the last 10 years or whatever? Bands like VNV Nation also perform their drums this way... it's not new or unique. There is a whole plethora of 80's bands that have done that.
It would have found it more interesting for him to mention it a bit more subtle and reserved, rather than interupting and ramming it down your throat like a fucking wrestler grabbing the mic that "MORBID ANGEL IS ALWAYS ONE STEP AHEAD, MORBID ANGEL IS ALWAYS THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX" speaking about the band in 3rd person, like it is all him.

Are they even claiming that they're doing something that hasn't been done before? Or are they saying that they're trying something different?

I'm sure they're doing the classic "gone-over-from-play-just-regular-deathmetal-to-deathmetal-with-some-techno-influences"-kinda thing.

Also Slime, you may have mentioned this and I missed it, but you did get to hear the new one right? If so, what did you think? I would appreciate reading your opinion on it. Congrats again on scoring the interview.

Re: Holy fucking shit!
It blew me through the roof. Honestly. This works for me. 100%. I haven't been able to get into a Death Metal album in a million years and this really gets to me. It's Morbid Angel from beginning to end. Too Extreme is just mind-blowing. The "choir" passage melted my ears. Fucking brilliant. Even the more dodgy tracks like I Am Morbid and Radikult worked for me. Poisonous riffing and insane attention to detail. Some of Trey's most "out there" work is definitely to be found on this record.
And Thors tracks are just beautiful. I always regarded Myrkskog as crap but Maybe I should check them out?
There's nothing "clubby" about Illud. The electronic influences is very much in line with the early Industrial Strength compilations and raw shit like Delta 9.
You can really hear the work that was put into this product. It's so far from being a rehash of older material. Yet totally and distinctly Morbid Angel.
How can you make a bunch of Hardcore techno beats with weird guitar riffing sound like Morbid Angel you ask me? That's a secret only Trey Azagthoth knows.
