You could be right about that. But I don't give a rats ass about what reviewers, magazines, interviewers or any other fan thinks about it. All I care for is what I think about it. And so far, as far as my taste in music goes, it's disappointing me. But as said earlier, I'll wait for the actual thing to come out and then give my full opinion about it.

These previews remind me of another band whose simplified music divided the fans somewhat - Satyricon. Finally, we have a death metal version of it.

Edit: and satyricon did much better job, IMO.

I'm refering to "Now, Diabolical" actually. I used to hate it a lot. Although they started the whole thing with Volcano which was cold and grim enough to be likeable, "Now, Diabolical" was somewhat lame, but I like it now.

I enjoyed Volcano for a time, but it was very indicative of the more accessible direction they would move in. I'll jam some Mother North now and then, but I mostly sard any and all Satyricon these days.

10 more dead has a closer feel to new zyklon than it does the couple of myrkskog tracks i can remember off the top of my head.

did thor play on the zyklon debut? if he did, he should figure out what he did there, go back in time, and do it again during the MA studio sessions for I.

edit-- i actually became physically ill when i listened to the extended sample of radikult. like, i actually, very literally, fucking, just straight up goddamned vomited. granted it doesn't at all help that i am drunk on some serious vodka tonics right now, but i am not kidding. there is a makeshift container right in front of me that contains some undigested foodstuffs and a whole mess of stomach acid. i'm going to submit this post and promptly get rid of it.

When I heard the 30-second Too Extreme! clip I thought it was kind of interesting. What the hell, I thought, it's almost like a weird second intro. Unfortunately it got pretty dumb after the 30 second mark. And then it sounds like Davy starts spewing his goofy lyrics in Spanish near the end of the clip. And WTF with that bass break?!

Blades sounded decent riff-wise, but Dave's vocals sound weird on that one. Kind of phlegmy or something but not in a good way. (And yeah, Thor was on the first Zyklon, I saw them at Milwaukee Metalfest one year shortly after the album came out.) 10 More Dead isn't bad either. It rhythmically reminds me of parts of Caesar's Palace.

The verse to "I [used to be] Morbid" feels very Papa Roach or something. It actually bugs me more than the gayness on Too Extreme! And that's saying quite a lot.

Destructos...WTF?! Who let a Genitorturer in on the writing sessions? It sounds like Genitorturers collaborated with latter-era Samael to write a Morbid Angel song. Astonishing how that wouldn't really work out. Incidentally, I'd love to see how the songwriting credit breaks down. Seems like I read that Dave wrote some stuff himself. He wrote Lion's Den and that was awesome. This ain't. I'd be OK if they just had some goofy ass INTERLUDES. These are actually songs, and quite long. Wow.

Despite the trite lyrics, Beauty vs Beast isn't bad, I guess. David sounds pretty good here at times. But then he does these "Aaaaahs" like on that Marilyn Manson song.

The Ancient Ones would not be pleased. You know, Trey told me when Gateways was about to come out that he was always into music that grooves, that causes the hips to swing. But he was able to like that without making Morbid Angel sound like that. Well, now you can swing your hips to a Morbid Angel song. Congratulations.

Mea Culpa sounds fucking cool by comparison.

The dude from Mithras was right. The rest of these samples make Existo Vulgore sound fucking killer.

As much as I was skeptical about this record, I really really wanted to give it a chance. Even if I knew all the magic was gone, maybe it'd be good entertainment at least. I was kind of disappointed when Domination came out because of the production and vocals and lyrics, but the music ruled. I was a little disappointed when Heretic came out because of the production and vocals (although I am a huge Tucker fan). In 20 years, I have never ever been this disappointed in a MA release (wow, it just hit me--I've been listening to them for 20 years, and for almost half of that time they haven't put out a record!)

There may be a couple of--maybe even a few--Morbid Angel songs on here. But unless everything outside of these samples is way different...make no mistake. This is not a fucking Morbid Angel record.

Who knows, maybe I'll grow to like some of it when I hear the whole thing in my 200 fucking dollar limited edition wooden box of shame. But Bob was right, and many of us were right. This is not the same band. I'd actually love to hear Erik Rutan's thoughts on this. They're in town next month and I'm bringing him a copy of the first Hate Eternal gig. Dude's always been forthcoming with me in the past, hopefully he'll tell me what he really thinks.

There are songs that seem to be really good ! But the "indus/techno" songs should have been put as bonus tracks !

The intro seems boring, and it should have started with a more traditional death-metal song ! I'm disappointed by these weird songs beeing the longest of the album and I'm not convinced by what I've heard of these tracks !! I listen to a lot of non death-metal stuff, even non metal stuff, I'm quite open, but the way it's done seems not to be good ! It's not a problem for me to have different elements included in a death-metal song, if it's well done ! But here it seems not !

I remember in the early gloryhole era , I was a huge Morgoth fan (actually I'm still one...), and they released "feel sorry for the fanatic" which wasn't death-metal anymore, but I have to admit that I liked it the first time I listened to it ! It was different, ok, not death-metal, but it was well done, very dark, and they kept in a way the sound they had developed on "odium". Here with this new MA, it seems that their influences have not been added in a good way, it's not really integrated, it's just drumbeats here and techno stuff there and it seems inconsistent !

But what I want now is to listen to the whole album, and hope that as a whole it's more consistent than expected...

I know! But believe me it's hard for me to feel that negative about this band. I will for sure allow myself to listen to the album with an open mind, but I don't think it's about allowing myself to like it. I mean...look. I actually liked Carcass' Swansong for what it was, although I had to treat it as if it were by some other band at first. I like Kreator's Endorama, same thing. When Amorphis went all clean vocals and turned into a rock band, hey, I loved em anyway (except for Far From the Sun...that just blows). I still like Anathema even though they have been un-metal for a really long time. Never could get into Feel Sorry for the Fanatic, though I love Odium. Trust me, I can love a band's output even if it's not what I look for in their music. As long as it's done in a compelling way. Like Katatonia--after BMD they do Discouraged ones, which has the exact same riffs, but really bad clean vocals. I can't get into it. But then later on Jonas became a really solid vocalist (in the studio, at least...) and even though the music no longer sounded like classic Kata, I really loved it. I'd rather hear a band I like go for it and do something totally different but still compelling, than to hear a band put out a genre-consistent record that sounds safe and uninspired (Deicide - Insineratehymn etc).

Well, not sure if I can post a link. As far as I know you browse the iTunes store (and the samples) through the actual iTunes program on your PC, not your web browser. Maybe you can do it both ways. I did notice that the Omni Potens sample is only 30 seconds, but the rest were 90 seconds.

Actually I don't mind that they did an intro...but it sounds so cheesy! Mainly it's the choice of synth sounds. You can get synth sounds that almost sound like a real instrument, and HUGE. This shit sounds like video game music circa 1995 at best.

Silly thing is, I don't want to force myself to like something. Especially not with music. It has to come natural. And that might be after the first listen or after the 10th listen. And to be clear, music that demands something from the listener is most often great! Otherwise it could be too dull and be the total opposite of what its music meant to do.

But you can't make yourself to like a song because its played by a band that you like. Eventually you're simply lying to yourself if you do.

In other words; I don't want to bring down the standard that I have for Morbid Angel's music just so I can like it and be OK with it. That's just hypocrite in my opinion.

100% agree with you. Like I said...I can allow myself to listen and give it a chance, but I can't "allow" myself to like it or not like it. I had a buddy that was the ultimate fanboy. When Megadeth's Risk came out, he thought it was great. Then a few days later he said "OK, I admit it, it's shit. But I TRIED, I really TRIED!" I don't believe in that approach. The only MA album I had to push myself to give a chance to was Heretic, and that was purely a production thing. Musically I was a fan from the first notes of Cleansed in Pestilence. Although purely in terms of production, I guessed I DID lower my own standard. But you end up doing that half the times you go see a band live, due to no fault of their own, so I think it is different.

BTW Void--your avatar reminds me of something either on a Deathspell Omega booklet or on the Norma Evangelium Diaboli website or something. You a fan?

Actually, maybe listening to DsO all day will cleanse my musical palate, so to speak. Chaining the Katechon is in order. I feel too hardcore radical, maniacal and animal for my own good.

Yes that's from the Paracletus booklet actually. I'm a huge DsO fan and also a fan of most NOEVDIA's releases. The Ajna Offensive in the US also does some great promotion work for these bands.

It is pretty amazing that it hasn't leaked yet. It would be so easy to record it from the streaming link. But it seems everyone has had enough respect for the band not to do so. I honestly think that's pretty awesome and that's not just something I'm saying because I got to hear it. The streaming version is full of bleeps everywhere. I'm waiting for the real thing to come out just like everyone else.

All these bands are friends of mine so I might be a little biased. But I would advice you to check out the following albums first:

Funeral Mist - Salvation (the first real neo-classic of this wave of Black Metal)

Deathspell Omega - Si Monumentum Requires, Circumspice

Katharsis - Kruzifixxion

Watain - Casus Luciferi

I'm not really into this kind of music anymore. But these we're definitely the one's that made the biggest impact back then.

Oh and if you want to dig in further, then check out the second album of the owner of NOEVDIA's band Antaeus called "De Principii Evangelikum". It's an amazing blend of fruital Black Metal and Grindcore. Really extreme.

Well I didn't really go that far into what I "thought" about the record before, just tried to describe what I heard.... I hate to say this.. but I have to say I find the lyrics pretty asinine. "Some" of the electronic bits are ok (parts of Too Extreme and Mea Culpa) but the best tracks are the death metal ones which don't do anything they haven't done way better before and seem very undercooked and underdeveloped. While Tim does a decent job on the record there's quite a few little drumming mistakes (which I don't see why they didn't edit out as it'd take like 5 minutes) and I miss Pete's drumming.

I know Morbid Angel claim to be (as always) pleasing themselves with this record and seem to be stating that they've just carried on whatever path they were always on but everything reads like a calculated gamble to reach a bigger audience to me, with every interview question where people try to challenge David about the direction this album has taken turned back into some pr spiel. Our hard-on bearer who interviewed him (very experienced interviewer who is a massive ma fan and doesn't like Illud) rang me after and said the interview was extremely difficult as David wouldn't be drawn on anything.

But hey everyone's a critic, I'm a cynic yet I wish them all the best. A few people who I know have heard it have liked the record and said "it's better than another Heretic or a rehash of old stuff"....
