I think whenever I have Morbid Angel marathons from now on I'll just pretend Morbid Angel changed their name to Mithras after Heretic and listen to that band's albums instead. :judge:
Great idea! The entire Mithras discography is great. Can't wait for the next album.
Absolutely this.

For me there is no need to replace anything from Morbid Angel with another band's discography. And there is really no band to even consider about it, for me only the present time Morbid Angel redefines the previous Morbid Angel and makes an infinite continuation - I felt that with every record from Abominations/Altars to Heretic and now to a new climax with Illud Divinum Insanus!

Can't wait to get the Illud cd and get lost within those Insanely Divine symphonies and shirt for extra inspiration through daily life!

Yes, I know their albums and they are good but Mithras doesn't have anything in their music that would twist my body, mind and soul as Morbid Angel can with every song!

The only parts that stick out for me with Mithras are those guitar parts that remind me of Trey's guitar parts, but that's just Trey's invention played through someone who was influenced by Trey/Morbid Angel or someone else who was influenced by Trey and even if it reminds me of The Greatest music it's still nowhere near The Gods.

I'm not putting Mithras down or anything, because for me no band cannot compare or anything with The One :redneck:

Right.... and all the ambient/new age stuff out there was also influenced by Trey I guess.... Time to broaden your horizon a bit....

You really have good imagination to come up with that regarding my post :redneck:

I said ''the parts that remind ME'' and not EVERY Morbid Angel fan. You can't know which parts I mean.

Those parts are reminding me of some Trey's guitar sounds that got bigger and bigger with every record, starting with Blessed/Covenant and climaxing in Gateways. These sounds were almost unheard of in death metal before year 2000, but from then on I noticed a small rise with certain bands of which all have been big Morbid Angel fans.

And there's nothing wrong with being influenced by Trey, he was also influenced by other artists :redneck:

The point is that Mithras is a good band, but for me only Morbid Angel can replace Morbid Angel :redneck:

You said this:
but that's just Trey's invention played through someone who was influenced by Trey/
Without knowing where Leons inspirations come from. Did it ever occur to you Trey also listen to stuff that inspired him to do thing like that? Dead Can Dance for instance? Listening to Mithras it is clear there is a lot of DCD in his sound. So they share the same source of inspiration.

So dismissing it as a interpetation of something Trey invented is wrong.

OK, then like this: Morbid Angel and Mithras have the same inspirations, for example the mighty Dead Can Dance, but Morbid Angel twist this inspirations into their own style, while Mithras with the same inspirations sound a little like Morbid Angel. Probably because they were inspired by Morbid Angel also :redneck:

And we all know which band was first of the two, Morbid Angel could not be inspired by Mithras :redneck:

And I allready said in that post that Trey is also inspired/influenced by other artists :redneck:

I got my starpack today. I think artwork is excellent and it looks nice with that metal case. Third listening is going and album is slightly patchy IMO, becouse those techno tracks. I don´t like any of them very match in particular, but Radikult seems to be my favorite. Metal tracks are good and there is some great riffs and solos, so I'm not disappointed at all

Anyway, does anyone have Japan edition already, some info about bonus tracks and differences maybe?? Mine has not arrived yet :ra:

i couldn't really sum up what i feel about the new morbid angel album. any words i would write about it would be biased toward their back catalog , of which i am extremely fond.

what it comes down to (for me) is morbid angel invented a sound that is uniquely theirs, and was way above any of their peers for such a long time. to me, they get a free pass for their first album alone, not even considering the other amazing records they put out after A.

so in an attempt to put words to my feelings about the new album, i pulled a few paragraphs written by john cobbett of hammers of misfortune, originally from a one hundred question interview he did with the site Lamentations of the Flame Princess. it is the closest thing that i have read recently that describes how i feel toward the album, and morbid angel:

LotFP:Tell us when a musician should ignore his own instincts in favor of the people he expects to be listening to his work.

JC: If your instinct is to show off and break into a solo or a massive fill in the middle of a vocal section or a quiet part, you probably have bad musical instincts and you should ignore them.

Another example would be the following: Say you're sixteen years old and the leader and main composer of a Death Metal band. Your band gets really successful, yet you're still basically a child. Six years down the road (an eternity when you're that age), you find yourself - at the ripe old age of twenty-two - much more interested in Jazz saxophone.

Unfortunately for you, daddy-o, you're under contract to deliver another fruital death metal album to your label. Since you're the "key member" of this band, it's up to you to write and direct the whole joint, otherwise you could just slip into the black velvet night of smooth jazz and rough dames. While your instinct is to infuse your album with sultry, soulful saxophone, you should ignore this instinct.

Why? Because you have fans who will buy this album because it's by the same band that put out all those awesome fruital death metal albums. They deserve some consideration after all, for all their support, and you can't expect them to appreciate your newfound slow burn on the sax. In this case you should try to rekindle your childish interest in death metal - no matter how much it feels like a one-way ticket to palookaville - just long enough to deliver this final, filthy piece of wax to the rubes in the suburbs. This way you leave the legacy of the band you created as a dirty-faced kid untarnished for posterity.

Then, you should disappear into your seedy world of cheap perfume and smokey rooms, like some kinda' dirty angel in a cheap suit, blowin' his ax down by the docks at night - the lonely sound carrying over the dirty drink like the mournful cry of every lowlife stiff who ran out of luck one too many times down here on Heartbreak Street, in a cheap dive called The End Of The Line...
