The Erik Rutan compositions are quite great but not like Trey's.



I think all the instrumentals: they're a nice add but nothing really MA essentials imo.



If you count tracks played live along, then also Reanimators mutilation and Dead shall rise spring to mind, of course..

It's pretty funny. Domination is the only album were Trey actually let anyone else than himself compose songs. And that's the album he's least happy with.



To me, the Erik-tunes is great. Eyes to See, Ears to Hear is awesome. Sounds like a Trey-tune to me.

Brunelle never wrote a single recorded MA song. Only the acoustic Desolate ways.





Actually on Gateways there is a Rutan song also...

And i have never read he was unhappy with the songwriting.. He did not like the production and hated the direction of the lyrics. In interviews from that period he actually complimented Rutan on his songwriting.

Yeah that's true, Trey was never unhappy with the compositions on Domination, only lyrically. I think Rutan wrote some sick sick music on that record. I mean "This Means War" sounds like you're in a middle of a frikkin dog fight between fighter planes in the sky.

It is a acoustic little filler, hardly a Morbid Angel Death Metal song wise-ass... And i said it was the only exception.

All the other stuff he wrote was judged not suitable by Trey.

oh stop being so pedantic, it's pretty obvious he meant that DW was the exception. even if it wasn't spelled out explicitly, pretty much anyone who posts here should be able to work that out.



i'm of the opinion that the interludes aren't really worth discussing here, as they're such an obvious choice, and moreover because they don't really make up the substantive material of the albums.



my pick would go to angel of disease. that main/opening riff just gives the song this punk-rock kinda feel, really caught me off-guard the first time i'd ever heard it. a fine song and all, don't get me wrong, but it's always felt a bit out of place next to the rest of their material.

Hey zim, next time you listen to Angel of Disease really focus in on the vocals especially, right? Then especially towards the end of the song just let the vocals fill your head, keep listening... when the song is done, let the vocals echo through your head. Hold it there, hold it as Sworn to the Black starts. Keep the "sonic image" of AngelO.D. vocals in your head and then bam, listen to the contrast when Vincents vocals on Sworn kick in.

I love doing that, fun every time. When you keeop this awareness of the sound, you really here how deep and sick the vocals are of that time period, since on A.O.D they were replicating an older style sound.

Yes Angel of disease on Covenant is clearly a tribute to Abominations of desolation, both in sound and name (AOD)

If we are just talking about death metal songs I'd probably pick Hatework. I agree Ceasers Palace is mostly Blessed are the sick. Another song to pick might just be one of my favourite MA songs: Stricken Arise. It's still MA but to me it's quite different, there's something extremely menevolent about it, more so than most of there other songs, helped by the apocalyptic repetitious parts near the middle which which make it sound so fucking pissed off and otherworldly.



A few more songs, secured limitations and I from Gateways. On a last note I think god of the forsaken is one of, if not their heaviest song.

Off topic - when you guys mentioned Eyes to see, I instantly remember how I have always mistook Erik for David as far as vocals go for that song. Maybe it's because I had known already that Erik wrote that song before I listened to it for the first time, but to me those vocals really sound like Erik's somehow. Every time I listen to that song I imagine Erik's pissed off face bursting the lyrics out



On topic - AoD sure as hell is one of the most, if not even the most un-MA song. Intros/instrumentals are not really among contestants here imo.

I was going to say Hatework - surprised it got mentioned earlier - but it's hard not to add that the guitar work does have a Morbid Angel feel to it. The fx and pace mix it up as far as I can tell. The massiveness of Morbid Angel is all over the place in this track.

So Callous - the mighty song that is Stricken Arise comes from Master Pete's imagination, brought to life by another Master, Trey

Trey said that Pete was humming this melody to him and than they delivered it together through drums and guitar!



To me there is no MA song that would sound un-Morbid Angel-ish. And I love all of their electronic/piano/acoustic/experimental songs - there's sooooo much imagination going on in those songs! Sometimes I make myself a MA mix that includes only this kind of MA songs



The new song I Am Morbid, which I'm sure a lot of you consider it un-MorbidAngel is to me a totally MA song, just with more of a ''rock'' felling to it. I Am Morbid can be compared to other ''different'' more ''rockish'' Morbid Angel songs like - The Ancient Ones on Blessed / Angel Of Disease on Covenant / Caesar's Palace on Domination and Invocation Of The Continual One on Formulas. Although all of these songs are unique and different from majority of their material they still have MorbidAngelTradeMark stamped all over them



Drum Solo - I agree on Hatework having the massiveness of Morbid Angel all over this song! For me This is Erik Rutan's LIFEWORK!

I'm almost positive that Covenant of Death was an old song, maybe not recorded. Don't remember where I knew that from at the time, but I asked Trey on the Formulas tour how similar the version on the album was to the original one. Was curious since they had re-done Hellspawn and Invocation, and at least Hellspawn was pretty faithful, albeit way more intense. But he said that on CoD maybe only one rhythm survived from what he had before, so was more like just re-using the title.



When Domination came out, I thought Eyes to See, Ears to Hear was pretty un-MA sounding, though I liked it a lot. Just the type of mid-tempo groove it had seemed really different to me, for them. Felt a little more "conventional" although the riffing was pretty inspired.

Too Extrme, I Am Morbid, Destructos VS The Earth and Radikult. Not Profundis Mea Culpa, cause it still sounds Morbid Angelish to me, kinda like Hatework. But with a techno part.

From other albums, Dooms Day Celebration, Desolate Ways, In Remembrance, Ceasar's Palace, Dreaming, Disturbance in the Great slumber, Melting.

The version of Angel of Disease on AoD has some of the best leadwork out of the whole MA catalogue imo, the little shred part in the beginning is awesome



Invocation of the Continual one is really really fucking weird but it's my favorite track off of Formulas. They pretty much took two separate songs and stuck them in the same track, and it's awesome how they just stitched together a bunch of really old unused material and it all fits together so well, and that solo is
