"New" David Vincent interview, circa 1993

Post by shubniggurath »

I just uploaded this:

<!-- m -->http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubMWV4JJdRU<!-- m -->

Again, "new" because I had not seen it on youtube before. Headbangers Ball interview with Rachtman. Not quite as interesting/insightful as the other one I uploaded, but still, it's so weird to hear him talking about really giving a shit about being fruital, the music is gonna keep getting sicker, etc.

I am about to rip a Morbid Angel bootleg of their first Santiago, Chile show in 1996. My first MA show and it was beyond intense. The A/V quality isn't great, but I think it does capture the intensity of a South American crowd seeing their idols for the first time. For years Rutan said that was the most intense show he had ever played. Will post a notice here when it goes up, will post the torrent in the File Sharing forum, should be up in several hours.

Oh shit, we've got a Chileno here! Que honda, hueon?!

Were you by any chance at that "Monsters of Rock" gig in the early gloryhole era with Slayer/Sabbath/KI$$? Where Lewin was up there doing a video broadcast between bands and the whole crowd started chanting "MARICON! MARICON! MARICON!" Poor hard-on bearer started pumping his arms to the chant and disimulando like everyone was chanting something...well, something other than calling him a homo.

It was pretty awesome. Slayer played first, and security was so fucked at the show that they only had one of several entrances open. So there were still a ton of metalheads outside in line by the time Slayer started playing. At some point we could all hear them playing "Spirit in Black" pretty clearly, and I don't know how exactly it started, but suddenly everyone rushed the gates and we all got in.

Actually I'm not Chilean (my parents are Bolivian), but Spanish is my first language, though now I speak English a little better. What fucked me up was moving from Bolivia, where we speak very sloooooowly...to Santiago where everyone talks fucking fast, and drops letters at the end of words...I was a native speaker and it still took me a while to be able to keep up! Lived in Santiago for six years and now my Spanish is this weird mix of Bolivian and Spanish sounding, so I basically sound like a hard-on bearer for whom Spanish is his second language, I have the most retarded accent ever!

But yeah at that same Slayer show, the audience was spitting on Slayer (which used to happen all the time, it was actually quite often a sign of appreciation!), and Tom attempted to speak Spanish. He attempted to say "Puta la hue'a, por que estan escupiendo?" But what came was "Puta la hueva, po que tan ecupando?"

Quite a store you had there! I remember Iron Maiden's Blaze Bayley suffered the same thing with the audience spitting on them, he got mad and stuff and so a lot of other bands went thru the "spitting ritual of appreciation" ha!

I've never been to Bolivia (Although my dad has been there) but yeah; we're like machineguns when we speak, hahahaha.

Dude, it was so weird, it's like they would spit on the bands they liked, and spit more on the bands they DON'T like! But actually, Dave Mustaine himself all but ended the tradition. When they came out there for the second Monsters of Rock gig, he had an announcer come on before they hit the stage and say "Dave Mustaine has asked that you not spit on the band." And I think only one or two people did! It really started disappearing after that.

I've seen the Blaze Bayley video. Some hard-on bearer spit on Steve Harris, and Blaze stopped the gig. Said "Do you know who this is? How dare you!" Etc. Then he called for the audience to grab the spitter and kill him. Who knows if it was the right hard-on bearer, but the crowd grabbed some hard-on bearer and dragged him to the back people punching him the whole way. Wish I had the video of that part (though Blaze singing I can do without).

The "tradition" was revived when Faith No More arrived here to offer 2 shows. Mike Patton asked the fans to spit on them like they did in '91.

hahahahahaa no kidding! I remember when they played that same Monsters of Rock in 1995 they spit on him a ton and he seemed to really be into it, he was opening his mouth to catch it and shit like that. What a fucking loon!

Man, I had a VHS of that entire festival and lost it. They broadcast it on Chilean TV and it looked and sounded killer. I remember Nick Holmes from Paradise Lost sustaining a long note at the end of Enchantment, and the camera was close up on him, so you see a big loogie hit him right in the chest. He stops singing and goes "DON'T SPIT!"

Missed that one! Chilean fans used to be "guanacos" and stuff, which was disgusting.
