Not into them AT ALL. The songs don't do anything for me and they were hands down the most boring live band I have ever seen.

If I want tons of sweeping and whatnot, I listen to Obscura. Much more musical, IMO.

I understand why this band polarizes so many people, but I don't understand how you could not enjoy their guitar solos, unless of course you don't like guitar solos.

Also they are putting out another album at some point.

So basically you're saying that any kind of technical soloing/shredding is just showing off? That's a pretty cynical viewpoint.

A lot of Malmsteen's leads do have a lot of feeling and are intelligently constructed (as with Muhammed's), but you can't see that as you seem to have a grudge against technically proficient guitarists.

i'll break it down real simple for you: when your song begins with a title like 'fermented offal discharge', and your musical thesis amounts to: 'hey, we're gonna have some fast drums and also we can keep up with those fast drums! and, dude, check out how many different notes we're playing! there's a lot! just, fuckin', TRY and count them!', there is absolutely nothing a solo can do to save that song. no matter how many string bends you throw into it.

listen, here's the deal: good instrumentalists are not necessarily good musicians. this is true of necrophagist and it is also true of YM. they are incredible players who never bothered to care about writing an actual song that actually communicates something interesting or important or profound. they eschew all of that in favor of spending every last ounce of energy they have to make sure you know: these guys know their way around a fretboard and they can run the circuit in record fucking time.

yeah, my last post was over the line and inappropriate, and i had no business mouthing off like that. but it's such an obvious distinction that it seriously fucking confounds me when people can't make it. it's something i was guilty of when i was a kid, so i assume anyone who fails to do the same is probably also stupid because they have not yet acquired enough experience to figure out why 'technical' anything is 100% worthless outside of the 'wow, they can play really fast!' factor.

so, in short, i apologize for my stupid and wrong behavior, but, you're still wrong.

To be fair, Malmsteen has one or two songs that communicate actual feeling. In fact, most of his music communicates a feeling, albeit usually the feelings involve the rock 'n' roll attitude of leather pants, the freedom of poofy shirts, the glamour of multiple gold rolexes, the hardcore radikal lifestyle of vikings, and butt piracy.

See, making actual points is a far more effective way of getting your argument across– as opposed to acting like a tough hard-on bearer internet warrior spewing childish insults. I tend to not take someone seriously if he/she comes crapping all over my thread with scathing, overly dramatic comments and starts up a flame war for no apparent reason.

That said, I do understand your where you're coming from and I still disagree with you. While it's true there are a lot of shredders out there who shred for the sake of shredding, (who also vastly outnumber the legit "shredders", which is why I think really fast/technical lead guitarists tend to get a bad rap), there are exceptions, and I think for the most part Muhammed and Malmsteen are among them. I'm not saying they're the most amazing guitarists, but they are capable of crafting some tasty leads. Shredding can show emotion in the way the notes are played, in the context in which they are played, the chord progressions they follow, and how they affect the overall structure of the song.

Malmsteen had some decent songs on his first album, I'll admit that after that he then pretty much became a parody of himself, and his image doesn't make it any easier to take him seriously. But if you analyze some of his leads, his phrasings and note choice are really superb. These are the things that make him great, not that he can sprint up and down the fretboard. I've been playing guitar for almost 10 years, have delved into a bit of theory, and generally can tell right off the bat if a guitarist knows what he's doing.

If you want something deep or profound don't listen to said bands, because that's not what they're about.
