This is a picture he posted on myspace that shows a good shot of his most recent setup. You can see G Major Processor on the top, some kind of rat distortion thing under that, and the rest I can't identify.

What kind of gear and effects did you use on the new album?
As with all the other recorded we made I use 2 Marshall JCM 900 high gain dual reverb amps and classic 1960s bottom cabs. For my basic tone I use the Rat distortion and a Rane EQ. Guitar into Rat into Rane into Amp. As for FXs I have a Univibe, MXR Phase 90, and a Morely Bad Horse WOW WOW, all of these go in front of the Rat. I have the Univibe on a midi effects loop to go in and out of the chain via midi because the Univibe is a nasty, leaky box. I use the Eventide H3000s in my rack, via the left and right effects sends/returns from my amps, to create the Stereo Imaging that builds the Lava Landscapes. I use the H3000s for my stereo delays and other cool textures. I got all kinds of guitars that have custom pickups and wiring for my solos, single coil pickups and /or humbuckers with split coil tap, phase switch. All kinds of tone options there in combining different pickups and electronics. Last but not least I swear by Mic_ing Technologies Mic_ing Techniques. Such innovative ideas as the Anti-Vacuum Culture and Wind Rift Mic_ing Techniques.These texturing tools are used all over this new cd as well as also used on Formulas Fatal to the Flesh and Gateways to Annihilation. Just listen the the solo in the first track on Heretic "Cleansed in Pestilence". I used the Anti-Vacuum Culture Mic_ing Technique on the right channel/speaker and the Wind Rift on the left channel/speaker. There are no "normal" microphone setups for that solo at all, and there are many other uses of the special Texturing throughout the Heretic cd.

thats crazy interesting, because he has the distortion level set only at like, 10 o clock, which isn't even 50%.... So maybe he plays both of the 2 together to get that sound, or maybe he actually plays them through the distortion channel on his JCM900's.

Rat like you saw (level/gain almost maxxed, EQ flat with maximum gain level boost. Crunch channel (A) pre-amp gain maxxed, bass 6/7, mids 5, treble 4, presence depending on room.
So basicly rat as a clean boost, EQ as a clean boost front ending the marshall set to a crunch. Very clean indead, with lotsa punch.

Yah totally, we used to do this in Divine Rapture. We'd drive the preamp with our Rat pedals but keep in mind lot of these bands get their equipment mod'ed man. It's usually not straight off the shelf stuff

I do not think, I know. We played with them. I saw the exact settings.
Also i've talked to Erik a quite few times about the sound. And Punchy came to hang out in our dressing room and he explaned a lot also.
There is NO noise gate btw. They punch the rat in and out during songs, and in breaks. (Erik was extremely quick and accurate in this)
The gear is pretty much stock. Trey uses a splitter cable to split his signal to both heads.
So he doesn't slave one head from the other.
A lot of the low-end doesn't come from the amps, most of it comes from the front of house.
Trey has sized down his rack significantly. The Rane -EQ is gone. He uses a Boss pedal now.
EriK used the stomp version of the Rat, Trey the rack one.

Well, we all know that. Shaune couldn't be on this tour though, so they were a 3 piece again. Erik still found this more natural, which is understandable after all those years as a 3 piece.
I've always liked that Hamer Flying V guitar of his...the one shown on the back of the Entangled In Chaos CD case. I think that's his only fixed bridge guitar but I'm not sure.
A bit off topic but...I wonder whatever happened to Erik's Gibson Explorer...and Thor needs to stop whoring those ish Dimebag guitars and go back to his Warlock.
Don't get me wrong, I love Pantera and I'm a big fan of Dimebag's playing...but gawwwd I fucking hate his guitars. I'd rather get myself a B.C. Rich Beast rather than a Dimebag guitar.

I played one of these at guitar center and to be honest it felt like a toy. the weight was nice, not unstable or anything but it didn't have anything special about it. i hated the way the neck felt.

No, it just had a crappy trem. Those Riches were kinda cheap guitars. But had solid wood bodies. So they were basicly screaming: "Pimp me" And he modded the shit out of it as we know.

Flat eq stands for an eq with all knobs set on their 0 level (there is no cutting or boosting of certain frequencies). For ex. for a Boss GE7 that would be all sliders set on the middle of the "scale". See the pic:

Nothing... he stompes his rat on and off in breaks and between songs. There is a lot of hiss and noise going on on stage from the amps. But a good front of house engineer keeps that from coming out of the PA.

It hangs on the wall in his studio. You can see it in either the HE dvd or a Cannibal corpse DVD not sure which one..
During his last MA tour,he told me he doesn't use some of his older guitars on tour any more. Including that white UV. they are either to valuable and/or irreplacable. Some for sentimental reasons...
I always liked that white yamaha superstrat he had.

Seems REALLY lame to wack all the 'sludgey' stuff right on the end, like it's tacked on, especially if it's just so Trey doesn't have to swap guitars mid gig.
all of morbid angel have to change guitars to do the songs in Bb, which is why the set is how it is, changing guitars normally takes a min or so which when a show is relatively short does break the momentum a fair bit.1

Which version? He's had at least 4 different necks on there over the years.
The headstock on the picture is a big one. it looks a lot like those used on the eighties Platinum series. (not to be confused with the later around 2000 reintroduced platinums)

Yes the longer and sharper ones, I dont like the BC rich headstocks with looks similar to the ESP ones.
Did the new platinum series headstock looks like the one trey had on his instaGib with inverted headstock ? I like that one too but cant find a picture.

He has the 4100 dual reverb.
The 900 range (100 watt) heads:
- High gain Master Volume MKIII: 2100
- High gain Master Volume MKIV: 2100 SL-X (super lead eXtended with extra preamp tube. Introduced in 93)
- High gain dual reverb 4100
The bad rep the 900 has comes from a silicon diode in the clipping stage. According to purists this should be all tube. However.. the silver jubilee, and various 800's also have this. In fact, on the Dual reverb, the crunch channel is ALL tube. The 900 was also the first line of amps that were fitted with 5881 tubes due to the lack of quality EL34 tubes. Another thing purists fall over... the first ever Marshall amp was coincidentally made with 5881.. they started using the EL34 because it was a cheaper tube. Not because of the sound properties. That was a fortunate side thing.
Ive heard bad 900's and just as much bad 800's. The so called holy grail the 800 #2203 was so inconsistend that they all sound different. A mate of mine had a 900 with EL34 wich sounded like a sissi. My 900DR with 5881 sounded like a monster in a A/B test. Don't just take my word for it Ask Void.... He has heard the amp too.
