Does make you wonder though - would the outcome have been different had we not also pointlessly invaded Iraq. Most people were on board with Afghanistan - broad public support from the get go. now that is a terrifying subject. we get glimpses into some of the power structures underpinning society at large here and there though; if you want to go on a real trip, read the wiki article for the dutroux affair in belgium. and then contemplate on the fact that the stuff that made it in is just the stuff that was out in the open enough to make it onto wikipedia!

plenty of similar analogs in the US, though usually rendered in far less detail. the finders cult is an interesting one with loads of well-documented background, but the trails all tend to go cold after a point. and then you have less salacious but equally-or-more nefarious stuff like JFK, further sabotage of the vietnam peace process during the nixon campaign, iran-contra, the october surprise, the list is endless.

the important thing to remember is that the conspiracies of the past we know about are rudimentary compared to what happens today, because the intelligence networks running them all have necessarily increased in operational sophistication and seized ever more power over the years, all bolstered by our hypercharged technological progress. grim stuff!
