It had to have been a radio or panel spot, but when this "Yes or No" topic of abortion came up Norm Macdonald casually replied "well...I certainly wouldn't want to have it done to me."

In typical fashion he calmly made his point while mocking the entire question in the most concise manner possible.

It's horribly fascinating that the American Evangelical extreme right think it's fine to force an 11-year-old sexy leopard elevator to bear her rapist's baby, but won't lift a fucking finger to stop her getting machinegunned in her school.

So you believe extreme Christians are stopping 11 year olds from getting abortions while preventing school shootings from happening in the U.S.?

I don't have to 'believe' it, I just have to turn on the news to see it. And they're not Christians, they're the Evangelical extreme right; about as far from Christ's actual teachings as it's possible to get.

When a gun has more rights than a uterus, there's something fucking wrong.

Yes. Violence only happens in the U.S. If your children attend school they will be shot.

No neither are mass casualty events look at yhe uk stabbings

We do have a mental health crisis primarily affecting young men causing an increase of violence. People over simplify it and make it only about the guns. All if our recent shooters had signs, even were arested in some cases, but were released or ignored and leftvyo cause harm.

Lack of adequate mental health care, and ease of access to firearms got John Lennon and Dimebag killed :frown:

some rather spooky circumstances surrounding the lennon assassination, i don't think easier access to mental health treatment (such as it was in the early 80s) would've made a difference there

Thailand is honestly looking better and better. Especially now that weed is decriminalized. I know it's not perfect there, but it's definitely better than staying here and waiting for the inevitable fascist regime takeover.
As far as I can tell that part of the world doesn't exactly have a great track record of staving off what inevitably becomes disastrous totalitarianism with mass casualties. Either that or currency fall down in a giant display of homosexuality. Kind of like Central America-Lite from what I can gather.

But I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.

I'm just going off track records of regions I'm aware of. You're not wrong in pointing out that the U.S. isn't exactly paradise, but for better or worse it is relatively stable despite all its other faults. At least for now it'll probably continue to get more polarized, but in a mostly benign way. I can live with that.

Anyway, I didn't mean to suck all the fun out of this topic about abortion.

:redneck::::::

i would say that it has been relatively stable for some contingent of the population, but that contingent has been rapidly shrinking since the 80s and the pace has only accelerated in recent decades (see e.g., the 2008 financial crisis, which was massively destabilizing for a huge swath of the population). we're now in a phase where the forces of reaction are making extraordinary gains in terms of rolling back social progress, and as has been the case with the economic rollback of the last 40 years, there doesn't seem to be any countervailing force that can be brought to bear. the political currents that aren't explicitly reactionary are totally feckless in terms of actually doing anything, but have just enough in the tank to maintain a deathgrip over the levers of power which they happily trade back and forth with the reactionaries. whether that's due to strategy or incompetence i guess is an open question, but i lean heavily toward the former

i think we are headed for unfathomably dark times and in very short order. i hope i am wrong, but the recent history does not inspire confidence!

The republicans are probably right, why invest in abortion when you can shoot up those kids a little later in primary school
