But what are we left with after these few faithful Morbid Angel compositions come and go? A steaming pile of fucking balderdash, that’s what. We couldn’t even team up on this with opposing views, because there are no opposing views anywhere on our staff.

I dunno, it's hard to be sure when they're so vague and just beat around the bush like that. What do they really think of it?

While I don't like critics, it should be noted that this site is among the most credible ones as far as metal reviews go. It's not some third league review site, run by some random kid with pimples. I read both reviews, they really are unmerciful.

Basically, there is a full page worth of quotes from those reviews, but just look at this one:
I bet Pete Sandoval is sitting in recovery shaking his head at the wretched predicament his bandmates have brought upon themselves, casting handful after handful of dirt upon the coffin of a once-mighty leading light of blasphemous death metal. Call me an elitist/purist--I don’t care--but I shall never dirty my ear with this insufferable claptrap again, but I will strongly encourage you do so in order to witness the fall of one of the greatest acts metal has ever known, and join me in its funeral procession. The kings are dead, and apparently, sufficiently buried headfirst.

It's pretty amazing that this album is so divisive. I really can't believe any real Morbid Angel fan could hate it so much. Some people might not like the experimentation. But the Death Metal tracks should please anyone into the band. But what do I know? Those reviewers probably just discovered Deathspell Omega lol.

And yes, for the record, you DID just hear David Vincent sing “kill-a kill-a kill-a cop.”

It just has to be a piss take, I mean I think Morbid Angel made this to cause a stir above all else quite frankly. This is their 'joke' album (If such thing exists), and it's also done at a critical time in their career for extra oomph. Or maybe it was basically a suicide mission. Where most bands just quit, perhaps they wanted to go out with bang ?

Hey guys, lets take our name, a legend in the genre, and completely fuck it in the ass for the finale! What a great way for us to go out, everyone will think it's hilarious and bold.

A comment below the reviews notes that, in a recent band photo, Trey looks like he's holding back tears.

I've been a fan for 20 years and for the first time I am not looking forward to the new album. To me (what I've heard so far) this is not the MA I like. The lyrics seem to be more mundane than Domination and the mix of the new influences is not my thing. I think this time they have taken the pushing the boundaries into new directions into the wrong direction.

"Pretty harsh"? It's fucking retarded! Perhaps some underground extreme anarchistic punk bands in the 70's would actually sing this, or some gangster hiphop asshole who think he's the man. MA: get the fuck out, seriously. :frown:

I didn't need to hear any of the samples to come to this conclusion. If the lyrics contain that kind of bullshit, next to how badass they are and have been "doing their thang since '89", it says enough for me.

Right on buddy.

These two reviews really aren't surprising to me. The album features a few elements that are fucking BANNED in underground Metal right now. I had that "scene reaction" to it as well when I first heard it. But once I got over my own stupidity I just realized how fucking well written this record is. How good it actually is. It succeeds in every aspect. But you'll have to allow yourself to like it. It's a guilty pleasure if there ever was any.

Those who aren't ready to do that can listen to that stupid (admit that it's stupid) concept band Nader Sadek.

when 'allow' is functionally a synonym for 'force', yeah, it kind of is.

if mediocrity is banned in death metal, how do you explain the existence of 95% of the genre?

also, why was your initial appraisal the result of stupidity? couldn't your revised opinion simply be the result of some serious mental gymnastics undertaken in service of rationalizing an inexcusably poor album?

I didn't "force" myself to like it. I just told myself to forget whatever ideas I had of what's correct in this context. Doing that I quickly found out that I actually like every single element/moment on Illud. This album holds so many different emotions. Vulgarity, ruthlessness, humor, anger, power, sensuality. It's one of the most far-reaching and all-embracing Death Metal albums I own. It's not B, C or D's stillborn twin.

You know what? Some will like it and some won't. Let's just leave it at that. In the end it's up to the individual to decide.

Fuck psychology. There are certain rules in Metal. Things that you DON'T do. It's not that fucking complicated. Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir are two good examples of bands that broke those rules and ended up paying the price.
